Message from the City Manager
|
Dear Community Members,
Sunday was really a beautiful day for the City of Benicia. I had the honor of being the MC at the first ever Menorah lighting at City Park. It was a very special moment for many members of the community…very emotional. I think that it is in the true Benicia spirit to be welcoming and show people in our community they are loved. The theme of this first annual event was ‘Be the light you want to see in the world’. I think this is very appropriate for our community, where most everyone works hard to make it a different place...a model for other communities on what ‘community’ really means. A place where kindness rules and we always make an extra effort to make people feel welcome.
As was mentioned by the Mayor, there has been a marked increase in anti-Semitism around the world and here in the United States. This is so incredibly sad, and we know it is wrong and ignorant. So, what better way to be the light we want to see in the world by taking an affirmative step to say, no…here you are welcomed and loved.
I would like to thank our Mayor and City Council for their efforts to make this event a reality, especially Vice Mayor Terry Scott. I would like to also thank the Mayor who always is supportive of these events and making every effort create a welcoming environment in the community and prioritizing these important messages. I would like to thank Councilmember Birdseye for her willingness to laugh with my faux pas. And a very, very special thanks to Ann Dunleavy and the Parks and Community Services crew for their, as always, over-the-top efforts to make every event in Benicia the very best, excellent and simply amazing. You all are truly a light in the world, and you make the City so amazing (literally and figuratively)!
I encourage everyone to take time this holiday season to be the light you want to see in the world.

|
|
On November 15th, City Council adopted a resolution approving a program to discover and offer amnesty on fines and penalties for businesses that have not filed or are delinquent on paying their business license tax. The objective of the program is to provide businesses an awareness of the regulations to perform business within the city limits. Businesses that have not been in compliance with the City's Business License requirements will receive a letter with instructions on obtaining a business license and information on the Amnesty Program.

Benicia Public Library Holiday Hours & Updates
|
|
Some people are too busy with holiday celebrations and gatherings to find time to read, but if you are a person who likes to sneak some alone time with a good book and a cup of cocoa between parties, or if you’d like an audiobook to keep you company on the long trip over the river and through the woods, drop by the library now.
DON’T WAIT!
The library, like other City departments, will be closed from Friday, December 23rd through Monday, January 2nd. During the closure all our carpets and upholstery will be cleaned so we can start out the new year fresh. So come stock up today to ensure you’ll have plenty of books, movies, magazines, and more to enjoy through the holidays.
REALLY, DON’T WAIT!
Many of our regular users have already heard, but if you missed the announcement, we will be migrating to a new computer system effective January 11th. In the week prior to the migration, we will not have access to our user database. As a result, we will not be able to look up or create new cards after December 22nd. This means users must have their library cards with them to borrow materials between January 3rd and 11th. So, if you do not have a card yet, or do not know where yours is, now is the time to come get (a replacement) one. Users will also be limited to five physical items* during this period, so again, come stock up now!
THE GOOD NEWS!
To help us manage the last-minute moving pieces of the migration, all physical items* checked out between now and December 22nd will have an extended due date. Check out now and everything, including movies and new materials, will be yours until January 18th. So now is the time to grab that giant tome you’ve been putting off or catch up on multiple seasons of your favorite TV shows on DVD. Stay tuned for more info as we introduce exciting new changes and options available to you with the new computer system.
More information about the migration and important related dates can be found here.
*There will be no interruption or changes to e-resource access during the closure or migration. This includes ebooks and downloadable movies, magazines, and audiobooks, as well as, research databases.

City of Benicia Senior Center Event
|
|
On Wednesday, December 14th the Benicia Senior Center celebrated the holiday season with food, crafts, laughter, friendship, and a visit from Santa. We had 44 seniors enjoy a holiday lunch catered by Venticello’s.
Everyone had the opportunity to take a photo with Santa, make an ornament and spread holiday cheer. Big thank you to Eliot Palmer, Recreation Supervisor, and all the amazing city staff who made this a great event.
Happy Holidays from the Benicia Senior Center!
