Message from the Interim City Manager
October 19, 2020

Hello Everyone,
COVID-19 restrictions have placed a great burden on our businesses and it is up to us as a community to support our local merchants through these difficult times. With our support, we can help them endure so that they can continue to provide the services and products that help to create the fabric and culture of our community.

Our businesses have not only provided essential goods and amenities, but through this adversity, they have also shown their great ingenuity and generosity. That should give each of us a sense of optimism and hope. We have seen business like Dunlop Manufacturing retool some of their operations to produce face shields for Napa hospitals, Sailor Jack's convert a parking lot into scenic waterfront dining and One House Bakery pivot their business model to provide ready made meals. All this under the backdrop of the Ponder Environmental / Chamber of Commerce / Valero Business Helping Business Grant Program where a group of Benicia businesses created a private fund to aid fellow businesses.

These are just a few examples of local businesses rising to the occasion during a crisis. I want to encourage you to join your fellow community members in supporting and celebrating our businesses everyday, during the pandemic and beyond.

Thank you for your interest in the City of Benicia This Week!

Erik Upson

Solano County Shares Gathering Guidance
Last week, Solano County Public Health shared guidance on private gatherings, which is good information for the upcoming holiday season. It reads in part, "In general, the more people from different households a person interacts with at a gathering, the closer the physical interaction is, and the longer the interaction lasts, the higher the risk that a person with a COVID-19 infection, symptomatic or asymptomatic, may spread it to others. Public health studies have also shown that the risk of transmission is increased in indoor spaces, particularly when there isn’t appropriate ventilation. Unlike indoor spaces, wind and air in outdoor spaces can help reduce spread of the virus from one person to another."

Prescription Drug Take Back
Saturday, October 24 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Awareness Day. It's a reminder to keep unwanted and unused prescription medication out of our waterways and out of the hands of our youth.

Although they won't be hosting an event this year, Benicia Police Department wants you to know that you may safely dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription medications everyday in the Police Department’s Prescription Drop Box located in front of the department's entrance at 250 East L Street. The box is available to you 24/7.

To dispose of medications, remove pills from bottles or containers and place in a zip-lock bag and drop in the drop box. For prescription liquids or creams, remove labels from the container and place the container in a zip-lock bag, seal, then place in the drop box.
Sharps are not allowed in the Prescription Drop Box. However, there is a convenient sharps drop box in front to the entrance of Benicia Fire Department at 150 Military West.

For questions or more information, please contact the Benicia Police Department at 707.745.3411.

Visit Benicia, the tourism arm of the City's Office of Economic Development, works with many local businesses to highlight what's unique about Benicia and our independent businesses to entice visitor to spend A Great Day by the Bay in Benicia. These efforts support our local businesses and help them, and neighboring businesses, prosper.
