Dear Families,
This month in counseling lessons, we are diving into the powerful concept of growth mindset. This idea, developed by psychologist Carol Dweck, teaches students that their abilities and intelligence can grow with effort, practice, and perseverance. Instead of saying, “I can’t do it,” we encourage children to say, “I can’t do it yet,” helping them embrace challenges and learn from mistakes.
Why does this matter? As your child faces academic and social challenges, having a growth mindset will help them approach problems with confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude. They will be more likely to persevere, work hard, and believe that they can improve—an essential skill for success both in and out of the classroom.
Here's how we are addressing growth mindset with each grade:
- Kindergarten: "I Can Grow My Brain"
- We will watch a fun Sesame Street video about how our brains can grow with practice. We'll talk about the power of yet—for example, "I can't tie my shoes yet!"
- First Grade: "I Can Learn Anything"
- Using the metaphor of planting seeds, we’ll explain how learning grows over time with care and effort. Students will understand that just like a seed, their abilities need patience and persistence.
- Second Grade: "Challenges Make Us Stronger"
- Students will make "resilience rocks" to symbolize how challenges help them grow stronger, just like a rock shapes over time. We’ll explore how facing difficulties can build our emotional and mental strength.
- Third Grade: "I Can Improve with Practice"
- Through the book Your Fantastic Elastic Brain, we’ll discuss how practicing new skills stretches and strengthens our brains, just like an elastic band. Students will see that the more they practice, the better they become.
- Fourth Grade: "Mistakes are Part of Learning"
- In this lesson, we’ll talk about how mistakes are not failures but opportunities to learn. Students will participate in the “flip the slip” activity, where they turn mistakes into valuable lessons.
- Fifth Grade: "Effort vs. Talent"
- Using the example of Michael Jordan, we’ll discuss how talent alone doesn’t lead to success—it's the effort that counts. Students will also take part in a paper folding challenge to practice persistence and effort over talent.
We encourage you to continue the conversation at home. Remind your child that learning is a journey, and with effort, they can achieve great things!
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Glissman

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) News
December/January Update, Quarter 2
PBIS Quarterly:
Dear Conger Families,
It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the 2024-2025 school year! Our staff has been working diligently since starting the year to develop a learning environment where every student feels connected to others. At Conger, we believe that fostering strong relationships is key to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. Our staff recently reflected on the importance of building connections with students and, as a result, we've introduced our Pacer Pals program. This informal mentoring initiative allows staff members to check in with students on a regular basis, providing opportunities for meaningful conversations and a greater sense of belonging. By strengthening these connections, we aim to create an even more positive and caring school community for everyone.
Additionally, we have also put extra emphasis on respect and responsibility in terms of bus behavior throughout the past several weeks. All students at some point this year will have opportunities to ride the bus even if they do not ride the bus home from school. Students will take the bus to Willis for Pacer Space lessons and possibly for other field trips. Staff members have modeled positive bus behavior and students have watched presentations about what that behavior looks like and sounds like. The bus drivers have a very important job to do each day and are also part of our Conger family.
Lastly, the students continue to work hard each day to maintain a clean learning environment in classrooms as well as shared spaces such as the lunchroom. Students are eager to come to school each Monday to find out if their class won the Golden Dustpan, Golden Spatula or Golden Plunger Awards! We are eager to see if each classroom gets each award at least once, as well as which classrooms will receive the most recognition heading into the second half of the school year!
