On September 6, we will celebrate Labor Day. Recognized in the US since 1894, Labor Day is a day set aside to pay
tribute to working men and women. With that said, let’s talk about the status of women in the workplace. We have
noted several times that the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted women. There are many reasons for this, however, two stand out as the primary causes. The first is that women were more likely to hold the types of positions that were of a higher health risk during the pandemic, and the second is the fact that women also tend to be the primary caregivers for children who needed to be cared for at home during this time. Likely you’ve heard about the difficulty employers have filling job openings; I would ask you to consider the aforementioned challenges that women tend to face when evaluating why this is so. Many available jobs are in the service industry, meaning they are typically lower paying and are higher risk from a health standpoint. Also, costs associated with childcare have risen, and again, parents are concerned about health risks. (As an aside, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that child care costs not exceed 7% of a household’s income, yet for a single parent more than 34% of the income is spent on child care costs as per a recent article in the South Florida Business Journal.)

So, what is the net/net of this? First, I would like to emphasize that we are more than ever dedicated to helping women enter or re-enter the workforce. In addition to our suiting program, we are emphasizing the importance of effective resumes that highlight accomplishments and transferable skills. Also, thanks to the generosity of the Quinn Family Foundation, we are able to offer scholarships to women wishing to attend certification programs (e.g. we have five women attending the Academy of Nursing and Health Sciences to earn a Patient Care Technician certificate). And, via our “Road to Success: Women Seeking New Directions” program, we are able to help women determine which career path may be best suited for them based on their strengths and passions. (See below for dates for our next Road to Success session.)

So, as you prepare to celebrate Labor Day, please keep all of this in mind. Help us to spread the word about all that
we are able to offer women in our community. Keep the faith. And thank you for your continued support.
