What is it about birds? We’ve always been fascinated with them. From the earliest art painted on stone walls, to the regal Elephant Folios of John James Audubon, to the ridiculous “Put a Bird On It” shop parody on TV, we just love birds.
What else has such diversity in size and color and form? A tiny, jewel-like Bee Hummingbird from Cuba weighs as much as one playing card, while an ostrich can weigh nearly 300 pounds! We see dazzling color in the tanagers and parrots of the tropics. The ptarmigans and grouse of the North, masters of camouflage, are difficult to see at all.
But the trait that most captures our imagination is flight; as long as we have been on Earth, we have envied birds’ ability to soar on the wind. And even though we now fly in planes and rockets, it cannot match the freedom of lifting from the ground at will and winging across the sky. It’s no surprise that dreams of flying are very common. We would love to defy gravity and see the world as birds do.
Of course we love birds at Eclectics. Our shop is full of ‘em. Glass birds, felted birds, embroidered birds, ceramic birds…it’s not quite like Portlandia, but we like putting birds on things, too. Come see how birdy we are sometime soon! Or if you're not spreading your wings just yet, order online!

Lynette Finished her Plague Doctor Mask!
|
|
Lynette Fisk loves making costumes. The Covid-19 outbreak inspired her to make plague doctor masks, reminding us that we've been here before and have made it through, as we will once again if we practice safety first, as crazy as it may look!
A Little History of the Plague Doctor Mask
In 1619, French doctor Charles de Lorme created Personal Protective Equipment to protect himself from the miasma - the mysterious supposed airborne cause of disease. He wore a bird-like beaked mask filled with sweet or strong aromatics as well as spectacles, gloves, boots and a leather or waxed-canvas coat. He also wore a wide-brimmed hat and carried a cane, which was used to keep people away or to examine patients without touching them!
Inside the beak he stuffed dried flowers (roses, lavender), herbs (eucalyptus, peppermint), spices, camphor or a vinegar sponge. These were to act as a type of respirator or filter to keep out the “evil” miasma, and it likely did help with the odors of the time.
The 1995 movie
Restoration
(starring Robert Downey Jr., Sam Neill and Meg Ryan), a period piece about King Charles II which won 2 Academy Awards for costume and design, features scenes depicting the plague and the doctor preparing his mask with flowers and wearing it to visit patients. While probably not 100% accurate, it is a great visual.
Today, replicas of Plague Doctor masks are popular costume accessories seen in a wide variety of styles which are NOT historic but certainly entertaining.
Please note:
These plague doctor masks will NOT protect you from COVID-19 or any other plagues. They are made from foam, not leather.
