The Resource(s) of the Month are three new books that support the profession of being a scientist. Every scientist needs to know the ins and outs of grant writing. Proposal Planning and Writing, 6th edition by Jeremy T. Miner and Kelly C. Ball provides you with practical strategies for all phases of proposal development and submission. Being a Scientist: Tools for Science Students by Michael H. Schmidt explains much in the education of becoming a scientist comes from outside a classroom and even the laboratory. It come from mentoring, conversations, and storytelling. This book talks about the culture of science and science literacy, as well as ethics, writing, and presenting. Finally Effective Scientific Communication: The Other Half of Science by Cristina Hanganu-Bresch and Kelleen Flaherty shows us that “science exists because scientists are writers and speakers” (Scott Montgomery). These are not inborn skills, but skills that need to be learned, practiced, and refined. This book will help guide you through the basics and into the kinds of writing from research papers and review papers to scientific writing for multimedia and the web.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected how we operate in University Libraries, our faculty and staff continued to strive to deliver the best possible level of service to our University community. As we begin to move toward normal operations, we would like to hear from you.

Welcome Alesha
Welcome MLIS graduate student Alesha Lindsey who is a spring 2021 semester practicum student. Alesha lives in Picayune and is a Family Resource Coordinator in the Picayune School District Early Head Start program. Her practicum experience is sited at the History Museum in Gulfport.
Her work at the Museum includes (1) working on exhibits, including Black History Month and (2) reviewing collection development policies for research library collection and archives and writing a collection development policy for the museum’s library collection and other materials. She is creating a local online catalogue for the books in the museum’s collection.

Graduate Student Appreciation Day
Ice Cream and Cookie Social
On Wednesday, April 7th, as part of the university wide Graduate Student Week, Gunter Library partnered with the Division of Coastal Sciences to hold an ice cream social on the Field Studies Building porch. The request to hold an outside social event with Covid protocols had the approval from the Office of the Provost. Nearly 20 students and faculty attended. College of Arts and Sciences Associate Dean Dr. Janet Donaldson brought cookies.

Celebrating National Library Week
at Gunter Library
North Bay Civitan Club President Keith Wilson and Club member Debbie Wilson visited Gunter Library on Thursday, April 8, 2021, to celebrate National Library Week. The Wilsons brought a dozen donuts for library staff and library users. Over the last year Gunter Library has partnered with the North Bay Civitans to collect food for local food pantries at Thanksgiving, to collect teddy bears for law enforcement, and to decorate holiday cards for veterans at the Biloxi VA Medical Center. All activities have been done under strict covid-19 protocols including limits on numbers of persons in the library, disinfecting and cleaning, masks, and distancing.

SAIL/Cyamus Joint Conference |
|
Gunter Library is virtual host for the upcoming SAIL/Cyamus Joint Conference. SAIL and Cyamus are two of the six regional groups that compose the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC), an organization of librarians and information professionals involved in all aspects of aquatic and marine sciences and their allied disciplines. SAIL includes libraries from Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, west to the Mississippi River, central Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas, Caribbean, eastern Mexico, and Panama. Cyamus covers the West coast of North America and Hawaii. Head of Gunter Library Joyce Shaw is program chair with a committee composed of 10 librarians from both groups.
The conference is scheduled for May 19 an 20.

Jessi James is the program coordinator for the Mississippi Inland Cleanup Program, sponsored by Mississippi State University Coastal Research and Extension Center. Before creating this litter removal and prevention program, she was a Marine Education Specialist for The University of Southern Mississippi Marine Education Center from 2014 – 2020, where she managed the Center’s annual summer camp programs and spent her time immersed in teaching K-12 students hands-on, outdoor curriculum.
Jessi is currently working towards earning a master’s degree from Mississippi State University in Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture studying the validity of citizen science data collection.

This presentation will discuss the Mississippi Inland Cleanup Program, its future impact on Mississippians, and how to get involved in local environmental stewardship.
Litter is a global issue that is known to decrease tourism, cost significant amounts of money to clean up, and have tremendous environmental impacts. With the rampant success of the widely known coastal program, the Mississippi Inland Cleanup Program aims to extend those efforts by continuing to remove debris through community-based cleanups, education, research, and awareness activities. This new citizen science-driven program currently serves 21 southeastern counties and hopes to bring the public together to teach environmental stewardship by stopping trash at its inland source.

The Mississippi Inland Cleanup Program (MSICP) is a newly funded trash-free education and cleanup event program sponsored by Mississippi State University Coastal Research and Extension Center (Biloxi, MS) as an expansion of the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup Program. This new program will extend the efforts of the coastal program by removing debris from the community through events (land and water-based) and provide outreach to help stop trash at its inland source. |
