Resource of the Month

On Saturday, November 23, the North Bay Civitan Club is hosting its 15th annual “Gobble Wobble.” This fun run on the Ocean Springs bridge is a food drive to restock local food pantries. This year the beneficiaries of the food collected are two food pantries—one at USM Gulf Park campus and the Eaglet Pantry at Gunter Library. A food collection boxes are sited at Gunter Library and the Gulf Coast Library at Gulf Park. Donations for quick and easy meals and for families are accepted. You can bring your donations to the Gobble Wobble starting at 3 pm Saturday. The fun run open ceremonies begin at 4:15 pm and the run (or walk!) starts at 4:30 pm. With the sun setting at 4:55 pm on Saturday, it is a fun way to support Gunter Library’s food pantry and enjoy some beautiful views from atop the Ocean Springs bridge.

Submit Your Book Recommendations

All faculty, students, and staff--now is the time to submit your recommendations for books to be purchased to support your teaching, research, and learning. Please include as much information as possible--author, title, date, publisher, etc. and indicate your preference for print or e-books. Please note there are some publisher restrictions with e-books including the number of pages you can download (usually 60 pages or less). If this will impede your use of the book, then be sure to indicate you are requesting print. We need your recommendations asap. Print books ordered for COA are housed at Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Please email to: guntergcrl@usm.edu

Annual Coastal Clean Up

On Saturday, October 19, Eric Saillant, Heloyse Leonard-Saillant, Megan Le, and Joyce Shaw walked East Beach from Halstead to Weeks Bayou to pick up trash. This informal participation in the Annual Coastal Cleanup netted about 30 pounds of trash. Commonly found items included plastic bottles and tops, cans, cigarette butts, and Styrofoam. Some larger marine debris and other trash were extracted from the marsh area along the waterline. The goal for 2025 is to have East Beach listed again as an official Annual Coastal Cleanup site.

Geoscience Librarianship 101

On October 22 and 23, 2024, the Geoscience Information Society offered its annual educational and professional development opportunity, Geoscience Librarianship 101. Librarians and students interested in learning more about geoscience were able to attend and participate in the virtual conference. As part of the networking social hour on Wednesday, Oct. 23, Megan Le and Joyce Shaw presented a poster entitled "Geology in the Movies.” IMDb movie database was used to find award nominated and winning movies with significant geological phenomenon as a climatic theme or significant feature. Phenomenon included earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, caves, weather, and more. The list includes a brief description of each movie and its age-appropriate rating. Shown as part of a curriculum for college students, these movies give an instructor the opportunity to discuss geological features, the role of the scientists’ portrayal, and how popular culture views geology.

Copies of the movie list and the poster are available at Gunter Library or email guntergcrl@usm.edu
