Time to Submit Your Book Recommendations
All faculty, students, and staff--now is the time to submit your recommendations for books to be purchased to support your teaching, research, and learning. Please include as much information as possible--author, title, date, publisher, etc. and indicate your preference for print or e-books. Please note there are some publisher restrictions with e-books including the number of pages you can download (usually 60 pages or less). If this will impede your use of the book, then be sure to indicate you are requesting print. We need your recommendations asap. Print books ordered for COA are housed at Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Please email to: guntergcrl@usm.edu

Libraries, archives, and museums are repositories of intellectual property. Each of these institutions has a slightly different purpose, but all three deal with the exchange of information. Copyright laws are the mechanisms that regulate intellectual property and strive to create a balance to provide rights for the authors of created works and access of these works by the public. Copyright law strives to maintain the balance of these two opposing objectives. Society is what gave form to the theories that helped formulate copyright law. Each of the four theories had some influence in all countries. The theories affecting copyright include fairness, personality, welfare, and culture. | | Part biography, part memoir, and part scientific adventure, Why Fish Don’t Exist is a wondrous fable about how to persevere in a world where chaos will always prevail. Named a Best Book of 2020 by The Washington Post * NPR * Chicago Tribune * Smithsonian. We will pick a day after the end of the Fall semester in December to have a brown bag discussion about the book. | | Eaglet Food Pantry Celebrates 3rd Anniversary | On September 13, 2022, Gunter Library established its Eaglet Food Pantry for the GCRL community. Over the three years, the pantry has added vegetarian and gluten free selections. In 2023 it added a personal care/hygiene section. A recent generous donation of a refrigerator will allow the pantry to include frozen and refrigerated foods. The Eaglet Pantry is available during library open hours. | | Gunter Library is a collection point for teddy bears. Collateral Crustaceans: Measuring Bycatch Mortality in Gulf Crab Traps
Presenter:
Micayla Cochran
Division of Coastal Sciences Graduate Research Assistant 🦀
Gulf Coast Research Laboratory
Blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) support a culturally and economically valuable commercial fishery in the Gulf of Mexico. Most states require the release of undersized and ovigerous blue crabs, yet mortality of these discarded crabs is an understudied and poorly estimated component of total mortality and represents a major data gap hindering effective management. The aim of this project is to quantify discard mortality of undersized and ovigerous crabs using bycatch surveys. Bycatch surveys have been conducted monthly aboard commercial crabbing boats in three locations across the Lake Pontchartrain-Mississippi Sound coastal system in Louisiana and Mississippi. Crabs were sexed and measured and the likelihood of mortality of a subset of crabs was estimated with a reflex action mortality predictor (RAMP) assessment. Throughout the project, conversations aboard commercial crabbing vessels serve as informal education sessions, which fosters trust with fishermen while empowering the research team to better understand the most pressing issues facing the fishery. The outcomes of this project will be used in the creation of crabber “best practices” and whiteboard videos to be shared through formal outreach avenues.
