Welcome New Students!

On Thursday, August 11, our COA team welcomed 11 new graduate students to GCRL. While we are not able to get a group shot, these are some candid photos taken during the orientation.

Time to Submit Your Book Recommendations

All faculty, students, and staff--now is the time to submit your recommendations for books to be purchased to support your teaching, research, and learning. Please include as much information as possible--author, title, date, publisher, etc. and indicate your preference for print or e-books. Please note there are some publisher restrictions with e-books including the number of pages you can download (usually 60 pages or less). If this will impede your use of the book, then be sure to indicate you are requesting print. We need your recommendations asap. Print books ordered for COA are housed at Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Please email to: guntergcrl@usm.edu

North Bay Civitan Club 14th Annual Teddy Bear Collection Deadline is September 8th

Gunter Library is one of several North Bay Civitan Club collection sites for the 14th annual Bears on Patrol charitable collection drive. This is the 6th year that Gunter Library has partnered with the Civitan Club and hosted a collection box for teddy bears. The recipient of the bears is Harrison County Fire Services. The bear collection celebrates National Teddy Bear Day on September 9th; recognizes North Bay Civitan’s anniversary on September 10; and remembers all first responder heroes of September 11th. Gunter Library accepts new and gently used teddy bears until the end of the day on Friday, September 8th.

Shown here is Megan Le, Gunter Library Assistant, with the bears collected at Gunter Library.

Report from the MLA booth at the Mississippi Book Festival, August 19, 2023

From left to right are Joyce Shaw, Paula Bass, Mara Polk, and Ashley Dees (not shown are volunteers Ricky Jones and Dionne Bass).

A small group of dedicated volunteers braved the 103+ degree temperature to staff the Mississippi Library Association (MLA) table at the 2023 Mississippi Book Festival in Jackson on August 19th. Over 100 of the estimated 6700 festival attendees visited the table, had a candy, grabbed some swag, and learned about how MLA supports academic, public, school, and special libraries. Paula Bass put together two gift baskets and a backpack with school supplies for three lucky winners of the door prize drawing. New MLA swag this year includes a backscratcher with a shoehorn and “I Love Mississippi Libraries” sticker!

Linda Barber Auld

Linda Barber Auld owned and operated Barber Laboratories, a pest control supply store that was founded in 1921 by her grandfather, Ernest R. Barber. In addition to helping New Orleanians solve their pest problems, for forty-five years she has also studied and promoted understanding beneficial insects. Affectionately known as the NOLA BugLady, Linda has raised 148 species of butterflies and moths while studying and photographing their life cycles. She has performed 30 years of butterfly count surveys for the North American Butterfly Association. Since 2014, to help monarch butterflies, Linda has installed seventeen school gardens in the metro area, enhanced gardens in four Louisiana welcome centers across the state, donated countless plants to public park gardens and created monarch waystations in seven different Louisiana cities plus one at the Gloster Arboretum in Mississippi.

Linda has enjoyed sharing her knowledge by working with schools and giving presentations to garden clubs, plant societies, plus Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists groups. Her 2019 project, “Geaux Grow Natives” spearheaded promoting the use of wildlife-friendly native plants. During the following two years, she sold over fifty species of native plants at her Harahan business location which was the third garden to be certified “Gold” level through the Louisiana Certified Habitat Program.

Linda has written articles for Louisiana and Mississippi Native Plant Societies, Orleans and Baton Rouge Audubon Societies, and Southern Lepidopterist Society newsletters. She self-published her first book, “BugLady’s Butterfly Summer” which is currently available on her website @nolabuglady.com.

In 2020 Linda’s efforts to help butterflies were recognized by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, and she was given the Award of Commendation. On August 3 Linda was named Outstanding Naturalist, and she was presented the Percy Viosca, Jr. award from LA Master Naturalists of New Orleans.

Since her retirement last September, Linda has been working on revitalizing the memorial garden at the Gloster Arboretum and various local projects. Her presentation today is “Monarchs, Migration, Milkweed, and Oe” which will share three recent research papers with big discoveries regarding milkweed, migration, and nectar plants.
