Joyce Shaw celebrates 25 years
at Gunter Library
On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Head Librarian Joyce Shaw celebrated her 25th year of service to Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL). We could not let this milestone pass without a nod to what Joyce means to the Library and to GCRL.
Joyce is an integral part of GCRL, always striving to make the library a welcoming comfortable place to spend time. She provides valuable assistance to students, faculty and staff alike. Gunter Library is a reflection of her love and care for the collection and the loving kindness she shows to all who enter. Joyce is also responsible for the wonderful Science Cafe program which has been going for ten years now, always enjoyable and engaging. And let us not forget the wonderful Gunter Library Holiday Open House, enjoyed by all, her very own joyous "holiday house party"! We will certainly miss gathering for that event this year. (See the photos below of past Open House gatherings)
Joyce is not only a vital part of the GCRL community, but of the Ocean Springs community. She has been a zone captain for the Mississippi Coastal Clean-Up for over two decades, spending time cleaning in her "neighborhood" of East Beach adjacent to GCRL. She has also been a Rotarian in the local Ocean Springs club for nearly 20 years as an active member in that service oriented organization. Joyce is a member in various library associations and has made contacts and friends all over the world which is a great value to the patrons of Gunter Library with her ability to use her sources to find those difficult to locate articles or papers when need be.
The comments below are just a sampling of what people at the lab have to say about Joyce.

"Joyce has always been extremely accommodating in retrieving research papers and even getting sections of books for me. She also really cares about how the students feel around campus and tries to figure out if she or the library could do something to make GCRL more welcoming."
-Alfonso Cohuo, graduate student - GCRL

"Joyce is always friendly, welcoming, and helpful. She is a strong advocate for GCRL and coastal Mississippi and works hard to ensure that we do not forget either’s legacies and the people that made them. Thank you Joyce for your dedication over the past 25 years!"
- Steve Sempier,
Sea Grant Outreach & Deputy Director

"As a new student who has been mostly remote during the pandemic, Joyce was always a helpful and friendly face on my trips to campus. I appreciate being able to drop into the library to chat and get her assistance with whatever I need."
-Emily Melvin, Graduate Student GCRL

"Joyce is an incredibly kind and helpful person who has personally supported me in my research by helping me find numerous books and articles and encouraging me to present my research at the community Science Cafe talks that she helps organize. Her clear passion for helping students and her love for the entire GCRL community is clearly evident in both her work and conversation, and I always leave a conversation with Joyce having learned something new."
-Christian Hayes, graduate student GCRL

"Joyce is an exceptional employee that is always so concerned with helping others get what they need out of the library. She is an advocate for the lab in the community and I really appreciate her help as co-zone captain with me for the MS Coastal Cleanup for over the last two decades. Congratulations on reaching your 25-year anniversary!"
- David Sliman, Chief Information Officer, USM Hattiesburg

"Joyce, Congratulations! You are a true asset to the lab and I so enjoy working with you. Thank you for all that you do to make SOSE and USM successful!"
-Jill Hendon,
Assistant Director of CFRD - Center for Fisheries Research & Development
"In addition to being a generous colleague, Joyce is a community asset to GCRL. She serves at all levels: from the university and the GCRL, to professional organizations, and to the broader coastal community. I most appreciate her dedication to students in the Summer Field Program - they rely on her and her staff for research assistance (usually at the last minute) as well as social support. I'm so glad she is part of our team."
- Jessie Kastler,
Interim Director of MEC & Coordinator of Program Development - Marine Education Center

Shaw said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to provide quality resources and excellent service that supports the research, teaching, and service mission of GCRL. Over the last 25 years, I have seen an enormous amount of change beginning with the acquisition of the Cedar Point campus in the late 1990's to the creation of the School of Ocean Science and Engineering and the coastal reorganization. Thank you to everyone who visits Gunter Library and uses our resources and services in person and virtually.”

State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs
Public Health Guidance
December 2, 2020

Due to the rapidly rising burden of COVID-19 cases, excessive hospitalizations and the high risk of COVID-19 infection in the community, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is issuing the following Public Health Guidance.
All residents of Mississippi should avoid any social gathering that includes individuals outside of the nuclear family or household. MSDH recommends that Mississippians only participate in work, school or other absolutely essential activities.
MSDH recommends that all Mississippians protect themselves and their families by avoiding public or social gatherings such as the following:
• Social events or parties
• Family gatherings outside of the household or nuclear family
• Weddings
• Funerals (other than close family and preferably outdoors)
• Sporting events
• In-person church services

Thomas Dobbs, MD, MPH
State Health Officer

Because of the Mississippi Department of Health guidance issued by Thomas Dobbs, State Health Officer, Gunter Library will not hold its annual end of the year open house. We regret the cancellation of this annual tradition.

The cards will be distributed to veterans at the VA hospital in Biloxi. Card will be available December 8-18, 2020. Gunter Library dontates food
Gunter Library partnered with the North Bay Civitan Club to support its food drive to restock the pantry at Loaves and Fishes, a soup kitchen and food pantry in Biloxi.
On Sunday, November 22, a box of nonperishable food was delivered to the 11th annual Gobble Wobble, the North Bay Civitan Club’s fun run and food collection site. Club members, volunteers, and fun run participants donated over 1000 food items.

This was Gunter Library's fourth year to serve as a collection site for this project. Earlier in November, the library hosted a box of food destined for The Lord Is My Help as part of a food drive sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ocean Springs. Our sincere thanks to all GCRL staff who shared the spirit of the season by bringing in food for both of these collections.
