Resource of the Month:

In Recognition of Pride Month

"Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside," - Lin Manuel Miranda

The USM Gulf Coast Library at the Gulf Park campus has created a display of “read and watch” resources celebrating Pride Month. The curator of the display is Charles Atwell, a newly minted librarian who is a Payne Fellow at the library. Charles writes "I had originally been tasked with creating a display for the Library for the month of June, I wasn’t actually given a topic for it. But as we are all aware, Pride Month occurs in June, and especially with the difficulties and issues facing the LGBTQ+ Community at various state levels across parts of the country, I feel it is important that Pride Month get the diligence and reverence it deserves to reaffirm our commitment to diversity and inclusion on the University of Southern Mississippi campuses and in the Library in particular. I took great care to highlight a wide swathe of disciplines and subject areas within the materials that I have chosen to include within the LGBTQ+ Pride Month display here at the Gulf Coast Library, as well as different identities, orientations, and age levels for the materials chosen, however it is by no means an exhaustive or complete list of materials related to LGBTQ+ works.  I would encourage anyone and everyone to peruse our collection not just here at the Gulf Coast Library, but as well at our Libraries throughout the University of Southern Mississippi. “

2022 SAIL/Cyamus Joint Conference

Over twenty-five marine, aquatic, and STEM librarians from academic and special libraries gathered virtually on May 24 and 25, to learn about current scientific research, to discuss best practices in librarianship, and to network with colleagues from across the United States and Canada. The theme was ‘Welcome Aboard the R/V SAILamus,” whose mission was a quest for dissemination of library topics and a cruise through a sea of information science topics.

SAIL is a regional affiliate of the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC) with 50 members representing marine and aquatic libraries from across the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Panama, up the Atlantic seaboard including the Canadian Atlantic provinces, eastern and central Canada, and across the United States west to the Mississippi River. Cyamus is the west coast IAMSLIC affiliate representing 40 members from the West Coast of North America and Hawaii, including Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, and Baja California.

Gunter Library Graduate Library Assistant Megan Le and Head of Gunter Library Joyce Shaw partnered to do “Ocean Pollution and the Deep-Water Horizon Oil Spill: Resources for Marine Education, School Libraries, and Public Libraries” as a presentation. Five librarians contacted us asking for a copy of the annotated bibliography created for the talk.

The virtual program with links to presentations was created by Conference “Cruise Director” Amanda Whitmire at Hopkins Marine Station (Stanford University) is provided here:
