Resource Sharing Worldwide
|
|
What do Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Croatia, Ecuador, India, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Ukraine have in common? All of these places have marine research libraries that have contacted Gunter Library to provide digital copies of scientific articles. From 2011-12 through 2018-19, Gunter Library filled 2,031 requests from other libraries throughout the USA and the world. Most of these requests come through a resource sharing utility supported by the International Association of Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC). Gunter Library joined the resource-sharing network in the early 2000s by entering its journal holdings into the Union List of Serials. Its collection of 1,388 titles in the union list makes it the 7th largest of the 67 participating libraries and the largest North American library represented in the Union List. As a part of IAMSLIC Resource Sharing, Gunter Library participates as both a requestor and provider and uses the resource to fill requests for Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) based faculty, students, and associated researchers. Over the same period, Gunter Library filled 4,024 requests from GCRL based faculty, students, and staff. Resource sharing is the primary way Gunter Library can help library users get the materials they need in a timely and efficient manner in an environment where spiraling subscription costs result in a declining number of subscriptions. Gunter Library Coordinator Maryanne Anthony manages this busy and successful service.

Closing the Book on the
2019 Summer Field Program
July 29th marked the end of the 72nd Summer Field Program (SFP) session at GCRL. For 10 weeks, students from across the state and the nation lived and took classes at GCRL. Gunter Library opened 23 additional hours per week to accommodate them
.
Six students from the program worked as library assistants during the evenings and on Sundays
.
The SFP had 91 students from 34 different colleges and universities with the most students, 34 from the
The University of Southern Mississippi.
Founded in 1947 as a field studies program for students in Mississippi and beyond, GCRL has hosted summer students for 72 years. In 1947, at classes held at Magnolia State Park in Ocean Springs, scientists and students labored under primitive conditions. “No air conditioning, no fans, no refrigeration of any sort except the cafeteria. Much of the class work in botany and parasitology was done on large wooden tales under the oak trees.” (Walker, 1974). This photo shows students in 1947.
