 Graduate Library Student
Juana Harris
Completes Practicum
During June and July, The University of Southern Mississippi School of Library and Information Science graduate student Juana Harris diligently worked on the third floor of the journal tower. Over a period of 150 hours, Harris inventoried, shifted, and correctly shelved materials that mildew remediation workers had replaced haphazardly during November 2018. Ms. Harris, of Jackson, MS, is working on her Masters of Library and Information Science with a certification in archives and history. Before entering graduate school, she worked for over four years in the Jackson Hines Library System. She also worked at the new Two Mississippi Museums where she was inspired to work in a museum of or pertaining to African American Culture and History. She described her practicum as “A God-send. I was completely inspired by the dedication of specialty and academic librarians and professionals. They truly advocate for their institutions and consider their profession to be one of service. This is dear to me as I love serving, assisting, and providing information and knowledge to those come to our libraries and museums.”
Resource of the Month:
"Research Data Management"

Research Data Management is a collaboration between University Libraries (UL) and the Office of Research. It is designed to support you as a researcher in making your data publicly available - both to comply with funder mandates and to share your work with your larger communities.

UL make the research data management process easy for you. UL assist you in selecting sustainable file formats, creating descriptive metadata to make your work easy to find by other researchers, and UL will take care of access and preservation of your data in order to maximize your project’s exposure while allowing you to focus on what you do best: conducting your research.

G unter Library Supports North Bay Civitan Club’s Annual Teddy Bear Collection
On Friday, September 13, over a dozen teddy bears departed Gunter Library on their way to the North Bay Civitan Club’s annual teddy bear collection charity in D’Iberville. On hand to say farewell were six COA graduate students shown here. We collected teddy bears for the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department to give to children to provide comfort after a traumatic event. This was the fifth year Gunter Library served as a collection site for teddy bears.

Pursuing a Dream: Protecting Mississippi's Natural Resources, A Portrayal of Fannye A. Cook
Our topic is Fannye A. Cook (1889-1964), a pioneer among scientists, conservationists, and women. Miss Cook was the driving force behind creating the Game and Fish Commission (now the Department of Wildlife, FIsheries, and Parks), she founded the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, which bears her name and led the push to protect the Gulf of Mexico's barrier islands. Our presenter is Cathy Shropshire, Ph.D. retired wildlife biologist, formerly with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. She will present a theatrical incarnation of Fannye Cook. Admission is free and open to the public, light refreshments served, compliments of Coffee Fusion. Sponsored by Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium. Children are welcome.
