Copyright Basics

Should you show that documentary you recorded from the TV to your class? Can you share that journal article with your class? Find the answers to these and other questions involving copyright by referring “Copyright Basics,” one of the Research Guides available on the University Libraries’ website.

The Copyright Act of 1976 is the law governing United States copyright. The law has been amended since 1976, refining the scope of the act. This Research Guide will help you determine if works in print or digital or recorded fall under the restrictions of the law. It is not meant to be taken as legal advice. The purpose of this guide is to provide educational resources for the students, faculty, and staff at The University of Southern Mississippi to make educated decisions regarding copyright law.

Dr. Richard W. Heard, III - Professor Emeritus

February 14, 1939 - November 2, 2022

The family has provided a link to the obituary posted for our colleague Richard Willis Heard, III. See http://www.riemannfamily.com/obituary/Richard-HeardIII

The following was written by Dr. Heard's wife, Pam:

"My sweet, beloved husband, Richard entered the gates of Heaven on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 903 PM. Richard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, son-in-law, professor, and friend. He cared deeply for others and was all things bright and beautiful. He was the most intelligent and kind person I knew. Richard lived life with enthusiasm and wonder. He was a life long learner, scholar, and an encouraging educator. Richard was still writing and working on publications during the last few months of his life.

He fought valiantly for over a year after having major surgery. He never gave up hope and kept “persevering”. Although I am heartbroken, I know that Richard is in his Father’s loving arms now and has no more pain or suffering. I will “keep persevering” until the day I can finally be joined with him again in Heaven.

We will honor Richard’s life on Monday, November 14 at St John’s Episcopal Church, Ocean Springs. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and a Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 am. Richard’s complete obituary will be posted later.

Please be in prayer for our family as we navigate life without our beloved Richard."

GCRL Science Café -

Changing Flood Risk in Coastal Mississippi

Tuesday, November 29th - 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Caylor Room #104 - Halstead Campus

703 East Beach Drive & via Zoom (see below)

Presented by Dr. Renee Collini, PLACE Program Coordinator, and Coastal Climate Resilience Specialist with Mississippi State University and Mississippi Alabama Sea Grant Consortium and Florida Sea Grant.

Renee has a dual appointment as a Coastal Climate Resilience Specialist with Mississippi State University and Sea Grant. Focused on sea-level rise, Renee facilitates the flow of information between researchers and decision-makers to improve science application. The lead of the Program for Local Adaptation to Climate Effects: Sea-Level Rise, she integrates a multi-state network of stakeholders, researchers, NGOs, and state and federal agencies to build tools, programs, and projects to address gaps in sea-level rise observing, research, and decision-making in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Flooding is changing in coastal Mississippi, becoming more intense and frequent. Coastal residents are no strangers to hazards including flooding. Join this Science Café to learn about the changes that have already been seen in rainfall patterns and rising seas, the impacts they have already had and are likely to have moving forward, and most importantly what residents and local governments can do to stay ahead of these changes. The session will be interactive with lots of opportunities to ask questions and get hands on locally specific flood risk information.

Special “Thanks” to the sponsor of the Science Café, MS-AL Sea Grant and to USM’s Marine Education Center for tech support.

This Science Cafe will be hybrid, participants may join via Facebook Live or Zoom.
