"Gunter Library News" is the monthly e-newsletter highlighting current events and happenings at the Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, University of Southern Mississippi.

Resource of the Month:
"Find Fiction" Guide
 Are you looking for some summertime fiction reading? Find out what are the popular titles and best sellers by using the resources in the subject guide “Find Fiction.” This guide has links to all the sources that review fiction and nonfiction popular titles and best sellers. 
Once you find a book or two that look interesting, then use Seymour Info https://lib.usm.edu  to see if any of the USM libraries has the books.

You can request any University Libraries (UL) circulating book to be sent to Gunter Library. Log into University Libraries for this service. Use “My Library Account” on the UL home page <lib.usm.edu> Books are delivered via courier to Gunter Library on Tuesday and Thursday.
Another option for reading or listening to popular fiction and non-fiction e-books, or audio recordings is the Jackson-George Regional Library System (JGCRLS). Use “My Library 24/7” with their free app called “Libby” from OverDrive and your library card, you can download print and audio books.
You will need a JGCRLS library card.
New Books at Gunter Library
Joyce Shaw Recognized
Head of Gunter Library, Joyce Shaw, was selected as one of Gulf Coast Women magazine’s 100 Successful Women to Know in 2021. Shaw was nominated by local journalist and USM alumni Keith Wilson.
When asked what impact she had on her community, Shaw answered "I believe in giving back by volunteering, I am a Coastal Clean Up Zone Captain, member of the Restoration Advisory Board at the NCBC in Gulfport and past member of the Ocean Springs Zoning and Adjustment Board and the Ocean Springs Wayfinding Taskforce. I serve as chair of the Mississippi Library Association Special Library Section and chair of the Atmospheric Science Librarians International. I also volunteer as a Rotarian and with the local Civitan Club."
Electronic Access to Inland Fishes of Mississippi by Dr. Stephen T. Ross now Available
University Libraries is providing free electronic access to Inland Fishes of Mississippi, an out-of-print book written in 2001 by Dr. Stephen T. Ross, Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences. Inland Fishes of Mississippi is now available through Aquila, the University’s institutional repository. Two print copies of the book are available at Gunter Library at QL628.M7 R67 2001 and Ref QL628.M7 R67 2001

SOSE Associate Director Leila Hamdan is a key note speaker “How shipwrecks shape the microbiomes of the deep-sea (and why it matters).”
Jennifer Frey, a COA graduate and Southern Conservation Resource Biologist for Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, will speak on Thursday, August 5, 2021. Her talk is “Working towards a time series analysis of gopher tortoise habitat in south Mississippi for the past thirty years and conserving the species for the next thirty.” Gunter Library Head, Joyce Shaw and Gulf Coast Library Librarian Jamie Stanfield have a poster presentation on August 5 entitled “ Using graphic novels to strengthen engagement in marine and atmospheric sciences and the changing environment.”

Severe Weather Awareness Expo
On Saturday, June 26, Head of Gunter Library Joyce Shaw staffed the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) table at the Severe Weather Awareness Expo sponsored by Mississippi Alabama Sea Grant Consortium. CERT is a program offered though the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security Civilian Corp office. CERT is a training program that helps people help themselves, their families, and their communities in the event of a disaster. Classes are broken into 9 modules taught over 20 hours. Fifty GCRL employees, USM staff and faculty, and local citizens have been trained in three sessions hosted by Gunter Library in 2008, 2014, and 2018.
