New treadmill workstation in Gunter Library
After a long delay, the new treadmill workstation has been installed at Gunter Library and is up and running! The unit, a
LifeSpan TR800-DT5 | Treadmill Computer Desk
, was purchased through a grant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield and the Health is Golden Program at the Long Beach Campus. Similar units are in place in Cook Library in Hattiesburg and in the Gulf Coast Library at the Long Beach campus. The workstation, which includes a computer and ample desk area, is available for everyone, students, staff and faculty during regular library hours (Monday - Friday, 8 to 5 - closed 12 to 1 for lunch). There are no appointments needed to use the workstation and there are also audio books available to use while you walk. Maryanne Anthony, Library Assistant at Gunter Library, who was instrumental in the workstation being placed in the library stated, "We are extremely happy to be able to offer this opportunity to the students, staff and faculty of GCRL."

Resource of the month: Google Scholar
For many of us Google Scholar is the “go-to” search engine. For searchers, one convenient feature is the link to USM Libraries journal subscriptions via “FindIt.” To see that feature with your search results, you should access Google Scholar via
www.lib.usm.edu
– click on articles & databases, then click alphabet letter G. On the G page, page down to Google Scholar and follow the directions as found below. Another Google Scholar feature you can use is setting up an author profile. This feature helps authors curate their scholarly identity on Google Scholar. A profile provides a simple way of collating your scholarly works (and citations to them) which helps others find your publications and often find an accessible copy they can read. For more information about a Google Scholar profile, see the University Libraries Subject Guide “Citation Analysis” page linked here:
http://libguides.lib.usm.edu/citation_analysis/google_scholar
This opens a pop-up window to share the URL for this database
Broad search of scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations. * Convenient hook-up to Findit! to help searchers locate materials in the USM Libraries.
If you search Google Scholar from a USM IP address, you will see the “FindIt” link, too.

Science Communication: Conflict Management
Conflict management training for graduate students, early career scientists, and all others welcome!
No one ever said communication in a science arena was uncomplicated! Conflicts abound and can be intense, passionate, frustrating, stressful, and sometimes overwhelming! In the lab, in the field, at a meeting, at a conference, with lab-mates, co-workers, professors, administrators, the media, regulators, politicians, funders—the scientific landscape is fraught with potential conflict, but fertile ground for mediation and negotiation.
Conflict management and negotiation involves both one's head and heart. No matter how hard you try to stay rational, emotions often get in the way of effective resolutions. In the Science Communication: Conflict Management Workshop, Southern Miss Communications graduate students address how to deal with negative emotions and stimulate positive emotions to facilitate conflict management. This is a 2-hour interactive session where you learn about the 5 core concerns to remember in conflict management. The workshop includes short lectures, group activities, case study analyses, and mini-role playing. You will recognize how to move beyond reason and use positive emotions to help reach a wise agreement.

"Saving the Planet through Recycling"
The purpose of the presentation is to discuss how recycling can reduce the negative environmental effects caused by garbage in our world. Join us as we learn about some alternatives to help eliminate pollution, depletion of our natural resources, and the costs of living in a disposable society.
