| Graduate Student Spotlight | | |
Sarah Binte Faruque is a part-time graduate student at USM under the supervision of Dr. Wei Wu, as well as the Summer Field Program Coordinator at the MEC. My research focuses on flood susceptibility modeling and exposure and damage estimation, where I am developing flood susceptibility
maps across Mississippi's three coastal counties. I completed my B.Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh, and my M.Sc. in Water Resources Development from the Institute of Water and Flood Management at BUET, Bangladesh. Before joining USM, I worked with nonprofit organizations and served as a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Leading University, Sylhet.
Life has taken me on quite a journey, from Bangladesh to Australia, then Florida, and finally to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, in 2022, where I have been happily exploring the hidden natural beauties of the Gulf Coast ever since. I have been with the MEC since July 2023, and the experience I gain every day working here is truly amazing. I am married to Md Mamunur Rashid, who is also a COA faculty member, and together we are proud parents of two wonderful children, my son Nayeel and my daughter Jinan, who make life more colorful every single day.

Advances in Marine Biology vol. 94 & 95 were added in May. Both have four chapters. This series is known for reviews on timely topics including marine creatures such as “A global synthesis of microplastic contamination in wild fish species: Challenges for conservation, implications for sustainability of wild fish stocks and future directions” in vol. 94, and “The biology and ecology of the basking shark: A review” in volume 95.

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
All faculty, students, and staff--now is the time to submit your recommendations for books to be purchased to support your teaching, research, and learning. Please include as much information as possible--author, title, date, publisher, etc. and indicate your preference for print or e-books. Please note there are some publisher restrictions with e-books including the number of pages you can download (usually 60 pages or less). If this will impede your use of the book, then be sure to indicate you are requesting print.
We need your recommendations asap. (Print books ordered for COA are housed at Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.)

Who owns the copyright to faculty publications?
Academic Practices: Within that tradition, it has been the prevailing academic practice to treat the faculty member as the copyright owner of works that are created independently and at the faculty member’s own initiative for traditional academic purposes. This practice has been followed for the most part, regardless of the physical medium. Some colleges and universities have promulgated policies, typically unenforced, that proclaim traditional academic works to be the property of the institution.
