RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

Scopus

On January 1, 2026, University Libraries launched Scopus, a large, multidisciplinary abstract and citation database created by Elsevier that indexes peer-reviewed scholarly literature like journals, books, patents, and conference proceedings. With over 45,000 titles, Scopus uniquely combines a comprehensive, expertly curated abstract and citation database with enriched data and linked scholarly literature across a wide variety of disciplines. Starting in Spring 2026, University Libraries will offer on-campus and virtual Scopus training sessions.

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

All faculty, students, and staff--now is the time to submit your recommendations for books to be purchased to support your teaching, research, and learning. Please include as much information as possible--author, title, date, publisher, etc. and indicate your preference for print or e-books. Please note there are some publisher restrictions with e-books including the number of pages you can download (usually 60 pages or less). If this will impede your use of the book, then be sure to indicate you are requesting print. We need your recommendations asap. Print books ordered for COA are housed at Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Please email to: guntergcrl@usm.edu

COPYRIGHT CORNER

In the 1909 Federal Copyright Statue, the formality of a copyright notice was mandatory upon publication. When you published your work, you had to “notify” the world that you were claiming copyright, or you forfeit your copyright protection. At that time placement would have been quite precise. For a novel, the placement was on the title page or the following page. You had to use the word copyright or an abbreviation such as the c within a circle, and you had to include the date of publication. In 1989, the notice requirement for publication was eliminated as a precondition for copyright protection.
