Gunter Library News
"Gunter Library News" is the monthly e-newsletter highlighting current events and happenings at the Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, University of Southern Mississippi.

Resource of the Month

University Libraries is currently conducting a trial of Elsevier’s Scopus abstract and citation database as a potential alternative to our existing subscription to Web of Science (WoS) from Clarivate. We welcome your feedback on both resources, especially in light of limited budgets and our commitment to providing the most valuable tools to support the unique needs of our University.

Both abstract and citation databases offer extensive peer-reviewed publication coverage and insights into research impact, though each has its own strengths and limitations. Our goal is to provide the most cost-effective resources while meeting the information needs of our users. In reviewing these two comparable databases, we found that Scopus would cost University Libraries approximately one-third of our current WoS subscription. As a result, we are considering a transition to Scopus.

A trial of Scopus will be available through July 31, 2025. During this trial period, we invite you to review Scopus for data accuracy, adequate coverage of your discipline, user experience, and overall satisfaction. Furthermore, your insights on how Scopus’s features compare to those you use in WoS would be especially valuable.

Welcome SFP Session I Library Assistants!!!

Hello, my name is Lucinda, I am from Kansas City, Missouri and I’m majoring in Marine Biology and Wildlife Ecology. My focus of study I enjoy is malacology, the study of mollusks, especially snails. I love reading nonfiction books about their diversity and biology and I hope to one day have a job in the field!

My name is Jacob Barnes and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. I am pursing a degree in biological Sciences to one day become a wildlife biologist or animal behaviorist. A goal of mine is to travel to Australia to see why everyone is so scared to go.

Mississippi's Marine Fossil Record

Mississippi's fossil record, at least that which is exposed at the surface, consists of 20,000+ feet of sediments that are variable in their fossiliferous composition. Most of these sediments are of marine origin, and they tell a tale of repeated inundations of the state by the ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico over the last 90 million years. This interval begins with the latter part of the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs 'ruled the Earth,' and ends with the Pleistocene Epoch, or 'Ice Age,' including the current interglacial/global warming interval. The biodiversity recorded therein has been documented by the Mississippi Geological Survey since the 1850s, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science since the 1970s, and numerous collaborating academic institutions across the country and around the world.
