Industry-ready students recognized for achievements

---Fifteen individuals representing six West Virginia counties and one in Ohio just completed hands-on machinist technology and welding technology courses at MAMC. The programs are in partnership with Mountwest Community & Technical College (MCTC), so students also can earn a career-enhancing college degree in addition to industry-recognized technical skill sets and professional credentials.

---Three members of the class earned associate of applied of science degrees, while others are still working to complete their degrees. The machinist graduates with degrees are Owen Friend of Charleston, Shannon Jordan of Huntington and Devin Null of Hurricane.

"I thought this expo was the most effective business-to-business event I've attended."

John Lovejoy, Sales Manager for FreshAir Filter Sales of Hurricane

Expo directly connects small-business suppliers to major industry

---John Lovejoy knows how difficult it can be for a small business like his to become a supplier to the state’s largest companies. The sales manager for FreshAir Filter Services of Hurricane said it can be challenging to figure out who to contact and an even bigger hurdle securing an appointment.

---That’s why Lovejoy decided to attend the Dec. 11 Vandalia Health Supply Chain Expo in Charleston. Presented by the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) and Advantage Valley, the event was the latest in an ongoing series of expos to connect West Virginia small business suppliers to contracting opportunities with major companies.

---During the event, small-business representatives from 13 West Virginia counties participated in nearly 60 one-on-one meetings with various departments within Vandalia Health to pitch their goods and services directly to decision-makers.

---“I thought this expo was the most effective business-to-business event I’ve attended,” Lovejoy said.

MAMC engineers capture famed MU fountain with 3D scanning precision

---One of the most recognizable Marshall University icons, the Memorial Student Center Fountain, pays homage to victims of the 1970 plane crash that killed 75 Marshall football players, coaches and athletic boosters.

---Created by sculptor Harry Bertoia and dedicated in 1972, the 13-foot high, 6,500-pound work of art recently was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Bertoia said his hope was that the fountain would “commemorate the living — rather than death — on the waters of life, rising, receding, surging so as to express upward growth, immortality and eternality.”

---Now, one of the university’s most photographed landmarks has been captured in full three-dimensional glory.

---Ferrosilicomanganese isn’t a word uttered in everyday conversations. Most people probably haven’t even heard the multisyllabic moniker, let alone know what it means. But ferrosilicomanganese is a critical component in steel production, improving the stiffness, strength, toughness and wear-resistance of steel used across the world.

---West Virginia is one of only two locations in the United States where ferrosiliconmanganese is manufactured. Along a bend in the Ohio River in northern Mason County, Felman Production produces 65,000 metric tons of the product annually. Its employees smelt iron ore, manganese ore and quartz in gigantic electric arc furnaces to produce the crucial mixture.

Employers needed to provide students with job shadowing experience

---Marshall University’s Office of Career Education is seeking employers from a variety of occupations to participate in a new student job shadowing program called Career Exploration: Explore, Experience, and Evolve.

---The goal is to connect individuals with professionals in their fields of study so those students gain a better understanding of how knowledge is applied in real-world situations and learn what other skills they may need to be successful in their careers.

---Employers are asked to allow one or more students to visit them on-site in April or offer a virtual job shadowing experience for students that align with their occupational sectors. Company representatives interested in participating in the job shadowing program are

asked to fill out this form by Feb. 24, 2025. For those who would like to learn more about the program, the Office of Career Education will host an in-person informational session Jan. 13, 2025. Company representatives who cannot attend may participate virtually.

---“This program is incredibly valuable to Marshall students,” said Hannah Bird, Senior Career Development Specialist with the Office of Career Education. “It gives them the opportunity to ask the questions they feel they have no answers to yet, learn from you about their career, and get a sense for what their future careers will look like and the job duties they may perform.”

---For more information, contact Bird at cline213@marshall.edu or 304-696-3791.
