Our Church Family
How's Everybody Doing?

Thanks for the responses from last week. We received a video and a "checking in" email but it would be GREAT to get more!

Email me a quick note or video (< 30 seconds) just saying hello to your Morningside Church family and a quick comment about how you are. (Send the videos or email hellos to: umcmorningside@gmail.com)

Doesn't need to be anything fancy or formal. Just say a quick hello, show us your dog or cat or your prized flower bed or a #Pandem2020 project you are working on.

Enjoy this week's greetings from Deb & Kelly and MaryLou.

Who will be get a HELLO from next week?
Dick an I are doing well here at Capital Manor. Although surrounded with hall mates and long time friends of Dick’s from work and high school, I do miss my Church family. I do see Glenda, Karen, Doug and Bob K once in awhile and I try to Call Mary Jo as I walk by her window so that we can wave. Keep well!

News & Announcements
From Our New Ministry Team
And so it begins...
July 1, 2020, marks an important day in the life of the Open Door Churches (ODC) of Salem-Keizer!

It’s a great joy to be here in Salem to join this incredible ministry team of Lay and Clergy leaders and to have a hand in guiding the continuing development of this unique vision for ministry. On behalf of the clergy team, I’d like to share some thoughts about the ways we will be working with you over the next several months.

Many of you have asked questions and even expressed some anxiety about the departure of your three beloved pastors, Dan Pitney, Wendy Woodworth, and Sandra Kimbrow. As you all know, the three of them, along with Alyssa Baker, primarily served specific congregations of ODC. But the vision has been for that to eventually change, so that the clergy serving ODC would be assigned to serve the broader group of churches, rather than the congregations, and that vision takes effect today, July 1.

As Pastor Alyssa said so well in one of our meetings together, we have decided to organize our work with you around “gifts and graces,” rather than around locations. In order to facilitate effective communication with one another and with the staff and laity of our congregations, we will each begin leading on various areas of responsibility as of July 1.

We will each be the “go-to” for a major area of responsibility:

  • Alyssa for Worship and Young Adult Ministries;
  • Kalina Malua-Katoa for Congregational Care, including Pastoral Care;
  • John Fleming for Administrative Committees;
  • Zaida Huereca and Arturo Fernandez and for Las Naciones and Hispanic Ministries
  • And, of course, we are so fortunate to have Jeff Lowery continuing as leader of our Youth Ministry!

Being the go-to person means that we will be your primary contact for questions and concerns in each of these areas. In other words, if you have a question or concern, call/text/email the person listed above that seems to align closest to your needs.

Of course, we will all be working with all of these areas at different times. As we all live into this new way of doing ministry together, however, it’s important that you know who to call.

On the other hand, these ministry areas are broadly defined and it may be that you have a question that doesn’t fit neatly into one of the categories we have named. In any case, we just want you to know we are here to help! Whatever you need, just call one of us and we will find a way to assist or guide you to the place you need to be.

Furthermore, we are all your pastors, and we want to know as many of you as possible. I want to know the people who work in areas related to Worship and Congregational Care, just as Kalina wants to know people who are involved in the Administrative work of the church. And many of you are involved in multiple areas, so there will be some natural crossover anyway—that’s all healthy.

The main purpose for offering this structure is to help us work together more effectively. With the help of Lay leadership, Staff of the churches, and the ODC Board, we will continue to evaluate this structure on a monthly basis and shape it accordingly. If something isn’t working as well, we will change it, and if something seems to be working well, we will keep it.

Pastor Alyssa Baker
Pastor Kalina Malua Katoa
