This week, we are highlighting our ongoing No Place for Hate programs to support inclusive classrooms, our new American Reading Company Core reading curriculum, and our resources to support students' mental health for better learning in the classroom. We also have exciting student accomplishments and senior night celebrations to share.
Mrs. Nord, our elementary social worker, presented a No Place for Hate assembly, prompting students to imagine they were pen pals interviewing each other about their unique cultures and family traditions. The students also looked at images of classrooms from around the world and engaged in a discussion about their similarities and differences. The overarching goal was to guide students in challenging their own assumptions and encouraging dialogue and discovery.
Our Middle School students participated in Diversity Dots, a unique activity that aids in discussions around Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). This activity helps learners understand, support, and celebrate peers’ identities through compassion and awareness. Using the dots as visual cues for defining characteristics, students held meaningful discussions around our tendencies to include or exclude those who are different from us and how it feels to be on both sides.
American Reading Company Core
The district's new reading curriculum, American Reading Company (ARC) Core, facilitates heightened student engagement in literacy through exploration and inquiry. Here, our fourth-grade students conducted research into animals of their choice and used their creativity to design tri-folds filled with information about the animals and their adaptations. The students then used their tri-folds to share the projects with their fellow students, enabling them to practice their communication skills.
In the ARC curriculum model, fifth graders take their animal studies a step further by publishing their own books about them. The students conducted research, wrote narratives, and created illustrations for their final projects. To support their communication skills, the students visited the Lower Elementary School for small group and 1:1 reading sessions of their published works with students in grades K-2. There was a great exchange of information and even time for some extra fun!

MS Spelling Bee Champion is Elizabeth Varghese
The second round of the Middle School Spelling Bee was conducted on Monday, January 29. The two finalists, Elizabeth Varghese and Pritika Jakka, competed for quite some time. After successfully spelling words, such as dendrochronology and avgolemono, the student crowned as champion was Elizabeth Varghese, who will represent our school at the regional level on March 16, 2024. Pritika Jakka is our runner up and will compete if Elizabeth cannot represent us at the regional level. Congratulations to both students for their hard work.

Mental Health and Wellness
|
National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) at the UES
NAMI Bucks County's Small Talk is an engaging 30 to 45-minute program during which elementary-aged students discuss mental health, learn how to name their feelings, differentiate between emotions, and practice healthy coping skills. The program’s goal is to improve prevention and early intervention as an enhancement of NAMI’s Ending the Silence by providing an age-appropriate conversation around mental health.
