#NHSD Weekly eNews

Volume 22 | February 9, 2024

This week, we are highlighting recent opportunities for our students to venture beyond our community with travels to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Europe. We also have school scenes showcasing student service and our new reading curriculum, an exciting launch to our Visual and Performing Arts Initiative, a Lions Athletics update, and more.

Adventures Beyond

Mr. Nord, Madame T, and the NHS Model United Nations founder Bernie Del Prado (Class of 2018) traveled with the Model UN Club to New York City to take a private tour of the United Nations Headquarters. The students had the opportunity to sit in the chairs of the General Assembly, walk through an ongoing conference, and learn about the global impact of real United Nations resolutions. Afterward, the students enjoyed lunch at The Hugh and stopped by the Fifth Avenue LEGO Store to complete their New York experience. The club sends its thanks to its advisors and administration for making this amazing trip possible!

The members of our TODAY Club attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) forum in Washington, D.C. where they spoke with legislators about their programs and the challenges facing society related to substance abuse and mental health. The students were able to attend the Convention’s educational youth sessions exploring topics such as policy, prevention, and ways to be vehicles of change in their community.

Our High School Music Department presented their concert The Sounds of Bavaria this week in anticipation of their upcoming trip to Europe. While abroad, the students will perform throughout Austria, including at the K.U.L.T. Hof bei Salzburg, Melk Abbey, and Votivkirche in Wien, and will also travel to Prague for a performance at the Czech Museum of Music. In addition to performances, the students will have the opportunity to explore sites such as Mozart's birthplace, the Vienna State Opera, and Schönbrunn Palace.

School Scenes

Our Littlest Lions participated in a schoolwide food drive last month as their act of service commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The students collected several large boxes of food, diapers, and numerous gift cards for the Fisherman's Mark Free MARKet serving local families in need. Students from our BRIDGE program thoughtfully donated their time to transport and present the collection to the team members Fisherman’s Mark, who expressed much gratitude to the NHSD community.

Ms. Lazzarino and Mrs. Haferl collaborated this week to create a “mystery tasting” in the UES Library. Our fourth graders explored a set of mystery books to "get a taste" for new authors or series they might enjoy. The students rotated through a 6-course menu and rated mystery books based on their particular taste. The activity correlates with their ARC Core unit Mystery and Forensic Science.

Senior Reed Finch Earns Congressional Nomination

On Friday, February 2, 2024, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick announced the United States Military Service Academy Nominations for the Class of 2028. Congressman Fitzpatrick refers to these nominations as, “One of my most important duties as a Member of Congress." Service Academy Nominations are recommended to Congressman Fitzpatrick by his Nomination Committee, comprised of veterans, active duty, and retired service members from across Pennsylvania’s First Congressional District. Among those selected was NHS senior Reed Finch, who earned a nomination for the United States Air Force Academy.

Arts Advisory Panel Launches Visual and Performing Arts Initiative

As our district launches its Visual and Performing Arts Initiative, our team convened its first Arts Advisory Panel to provide insights and guidance that will inform enhancements to our arts curricula and facilities. More than 50 participants, including representatives from local arts organizations and higher education institutions, as well as professional artists, faculty members, parents/guardians, and administrators gathered for the discussion, which explored innovations in the arts, industry trends, and how we can best equip students interested in the arts for future success. We deeply appreciate the incredible turnout for this forum, which reflects our community's investment in the arts and our students.

Lions Athletics

Coach Dwayne of the Positive Coaches Alliance spoke to our Student Athlete Leadership Committee about using positive talk to build strong relationships among teammates. Coach Dwayne also focused on the importance of a positive mindset and working as a unit. The students engaged in a group conversation about these topics and how they can help facilitate a positive environment on their respective teams.

Students had the opportunity to meet our new Boys Soccer coach, Chris Van Pelt, last evening. Thank you to our families for giving our new coach a warm welcome. We look forward to a great season this fall.

Our Boys Basketball team celebrated their seniors and an exciting 58-50 win during their game last night against Morrisville HS. Congratulations to Heath Miller, Mitch Miller, Jonathan Gormley, Nicholas Rieder, Liam Ross, Dylan Fitzgerald, Alexander Shukakidze, and Liam Davidson. Photo: Karla Donohoe
