Volume 7 | October 13, 2023

For Fire Prevention Week, we are sharing visits with our local first responders and an important collection drive on behalf of our HS National Honor Society. We also have scenes showcasing our Profile of a Graduate theme, social and emotional intelligence, and a look at Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. There is exciting news from our Lions Athletics teams as the fall season nears its close, and don't miss out on LIONFEST next week!

Fire Safety in our School and Our Community

Students at the LES and UES visited this week with our local first responders from the New Hope Eagle Fire Company and the Lambertville New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad. The firefighters reviewed fire safety lessons, including stop, drop, and roll, the importance of checking your smoke alarms, and developing an escape plan at home. The Rescue team took the students through the components of their ambulance to show the many ways they are ready to assist those in need of help during an emergency. We are grateful to these local heroes for sharing their time with our students during Fire Prevention Week.

National Honor Society to Collect Carbon Monoxide Detectors for Families in Need

During the visit, Lieutenant Gallagher of Eagle Fire Company joined high school students Heath and Mitch Miller in this quick video about the NHS National Honor Society's upcoming carbon monoxide detector collection. In the video, they explain the importance of having working detectors in your home and how NHSD students are trying to provide these vital detectors for those in need in our surrounding communities. Learn how you can support their collection for local charities here.

School Scenes

The photos above showcase our students developing social and emotional intelligence, one of the qualities in our district's Profile of a Graduate. In music class, one of our fifth graders demonstrates this while helping a classmate successfully play the xylophone. In Ms. Nichols' class, students participate in Circle-Up Thursdays, a recurring set of team-building activities designed with social-emotional learning skills in mind. Shown above is “Spherical Object Madness," which encouraged students to use non-verbal communication skills to throw multiple spherical objects at once in a pre-determined pattern. "The activity fosters collaboration, patience, understanding, and encouragement, and most importantly, it is FUN!" said Ms. Nichols. "I truly believe connection is at the heart of what we do; not just connection to the adults in the room, but connections to classmates as well. The difference I see from the beginning of the year to the end is quite remarkable."

These second graders were recognized last week for completing the 100 Book Challenge associated with our new reading curriculum, ARC Core. Students read both in school and at home, and when they log 100 steps, they receive a medal of recognition. Each milestone is represented by a different color medal lanyard so kids can read their way through the rainbow! The 100 Book Challenge is meant to transform a school’s reading culture and provide daily opportunities for students to transfer learned skills to high interest texts.

Our Lions Cheerleading Squad had an incredible turnout for their recent cheer clinic with over 50 students participating. The future is bright for our recently re-launched cheer program, and it was wonderful to see so many children demonstrating school spirit.

Hispanic Heritage Month

The forty students who participate in our English Second Language and Multicultural Clubs teamed up to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month. The students planned a week's worth of activities and our science faculty members joined the celebration by wearing the colors of Spain and Latin America. Above, the students finished the week with a craft project coloring skulls with floral wreaths to recognize Dia de Los Muertos. They will add this to their hallway display celebrating Hispanic culture.

Lions Athletics

Our Lions Field Hockey team celebrated their seniors and a 5-0 win against William Tennent last night. Congratulations to Caroline Berman, Mia Patino, Morgan Riggione, Madie Thistlewaite, and Lauren Trenti.

Congratulations to our Lions Golf team members, Charlie Plebani, Ethan Broekema, Max Wright, Frank Aster, and Mitchell Lontchar for earning NHSD's fourth consecutive District 1-AA Championship title! See more in the Reporter Online.

Our Lions Girls Tennis team played well in the Suburban One League Tournament and earned 3rd Place both in singles (Devika Amuth) and doubles (Helen Knapp and Devika Amuth). Here they are with a very proud Coach Heft!

Both our Lions Girls and Boys Cross Country teams were winners at the Council Rock Invitational this week! The teams were led by sophomores Ruby Keddie and Jeffrey Migliaccio. Senior Kaitlyn Feehan rounded out the girls squad and her inspirational effort was instrumental to this win. Congrats to the team, and we wish them well as they gear up for upcoming league and district meets.
