#NHSD Summer Update

July 14, 2023

We hope our entire NHSD community is enjoying a restful and joyful summer break. Here is a brief update with exciting achievements for our district and upcoming community happenings.

Sharing our Innovations at the National AASA Summit

A team of New Hope-Solebury educators was recently invited to present workshops at the American Association of School Administrators’ (AASA) Learning 2025 Summit in Washington, D.C. The workshops highlighted our district’s most groundbreaking innovations, including the launch of a state-of-the-art STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) education facility and our signature APEX (Active Personal Educational Experience) internship program for seniors. AASA's Learning 2025 Project is a national initiative driving future-focused capacity-building within our education system. This Summit showcased a range of successful and innovative practices from across the nation that are reshaping classrooms and offered workshops to support leadership development, innovation and classroom culture. Principal Props!

Our Lower Elementary Principal Mrs. Bloom recently presented at the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) Conference, which brings together K-8 administrators to focus on the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders. This year's key content areas were family and community partnerships, evidence-based social-emotional learning, and high-quality instruction and interactions for Grade K-3 leaders. Mrs. Bloom's workshop showcased our district's Kindergarten Placement Process, developed and piloted last year by our team of Lower Elementary educators. This innovative strategy uses academic and behavioral data to build balanced kindergarten classrooms in order to maximize instructional time for both students and teachers.

As he introduced our APEX team for their presentation at the AASA Summit, High School Principal Mr. Sasse highlighted the value of our district's participation in the Learning 2025 Project and how it has influenced our own advancements. Mr. Sasse explained to the audience how exploring, seeing, and sharing best practices with educators representing the most innovative districts in our nation provided new ideas and guidance for our team as we prepared to launch a new high school block format schedule and our Career Pathways program.

We are delighted to celebrate our Middle School Principal Erik Pedersen, who recently earned his Doctorate in Education with Superintendency Certification from Drexel University. Dr. Pedersen's research focused on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and examined various leadership styles proven to be effective in navigating our current school climate. We congratulate Dr. Pedersen on this exciting milestone and look forward to all that the depth of his educational experiences will continue to bring to our schools.

Our Celebrity Reader Series continues in partnership with the Free Library of New Hope and Solebury. The Series was designed to encourage families to explore the resources of their local public library and to further inspire students' participation in our Summer Reading and Math Challenges. Upper Elementary Principal Mr. Brosious shared some of his favorite titles with his audience on June 28, including The Stranger and Dragons Love Tacos, and was even joined by his son Jace for the occasion. We are #NoPlace4Hate

All four of our district's school buildings recently received official #NoPlace4Hate designation from the Anti-Defamation League. Schools earn this distinction by implementing schoolwide, discussion-based and active learning activities designed to engage students in conversations about inclusion, bias, and the impacts of bullying. The images above showcase some of the many programs we have implemented, including a kindness welcome wall at the LES, conversations about bullying at the UES, a MS visual reflecting individuality through the shoes we wear, and a "How to Be An Ally" wall at the HS.

Community Happenings

Our Lions Basketball team will host a Youth Basketball Camp for children entering grades 2-9 from August 7-10. The camp will be run in the NHSD gym by our Head Girls and Boys Basketball Coaches.

Children ages 6-11 are invited to join the New Hope Track Club. The program is free and will run on Sundays from September 10 - October 29. Club members will be introduced to track events, learn drills, and participate in friendly intersquad competitions.

All are invited to join Solebury Township Police for National Night Out 2023 on Tuesday, August 1 at Laurel Park. Local businesses are encouraged to get involved. See more information here.
