#NHSD Weekly eNews

Volume 26 | March 8, 2024

This week, we are sharing a district feature in Business View Magazine, highlights from our Read Across America celebrations, exciting news for our High School VEX Robotics team, recent Career Pathways programs, and a communications survey because we want to hear from you!

NHSD Featured in Business View Magazine

We are delighted to be among the districts recently profiled in a recent issue of Business View Magazine, a news resource for executives, entrepreneurs, and others interested in exploring current industry trends and best practices. The feature highlights our district's innovations and the important partnerships that drive our success.

Read Across America

Our district planned a series of events to inspire our students' love for reading in celebration of Read Across America Week! All elementary students participated in an interactive assembly titled Books: The Magic Is Real with Joe Romano. Mr. Romano used humor and magic tricks to highlight the plots and characters of famous children’s books, such as Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Holes. "His entire audience was laughing, clapping, and gasping in amazement! Students left the assembly excited about books and reading, which was the main purpose," shared Leanne Iannacone, Reading Specialist. Our LES and UES families were also invited to a family literacy night, called Camp Read S'more. We played Kahoot around the campfire, read books by flashlight, packed s'mores kits, and enjoyed read-alouds with NHSD team members to show students the joys of reading, wherever you are! Students also participated in a schoolwide book exchange, enabling every student K-5 to bring home a “new” book. At the Middle School Library, author Kate DeCamillo livestreamed to share her new book, Ferris and answered student questions. "Our sixth graders love this author and remember fondly reading Winn-Dixie back in third grade," shared MS Librarian Craig Smith.

School Highlights

Our Littlest Lions had a great time at their country western- themed school dance filled with plenty of fun activities, including braiding yarn, pin-the-badge on the sheriff, gold-mining, and toss the ring on the cow. Special thank you to Tisa Lance and the LES Dance Committee for arranging such a fantastic event for our students! Photo Credit: Kristina D'Amico

Our third grade students presented a Cultural Heritage Fair, sharing explorations of their lineage. The students created posters filled with information about the histories and traditions of a country of their origin and shared their findings with their families and classmates.

Last Saturday, three of our High School Robotics teams competed with more than 80 teams across Pennsylvania in the State VEX Robotics competition. Our C Team, comprised of Matt Picone, Anthony Neff, William Tritremmel, Charlie Taggi, Ethan Broekema, and Tripp Spencer, was given the prestigious Innovate Award. The judges were impressed by an innovative locking mechanism the team developed and their extensive documentation of their design process. With the Innovate Award comes an invitation to compete in the VEX World Competition, which will gather 800 teams from across the globe. We are delighted to see this team advance to the World Competitions in Dallas, Texas next month!

Career Pathways

Students in our Business and Communications Pathway participated in a session with Jon Bodnar, General Manager of the Trenton Thunder minor league baseball team. Mr. Bodnar spoke to students about the importance of networking and taking advantage of every opportunity that comes their way. He advised students to achieve success by being vocal about their goals and being the "hardest working person in the room."

Officer Mohammed Elsayed, NHS Class of 2022, visited to speak with our ESL students, as a former ESL student himself. He showed the students his police car, shared what an officer’s job entails, and explained the steps to become a police officer. He later visited Mr. Pfancook's forensics class to speak with students about its applications in law enforcement.

Students in our Arts and Humanities Pathway have explored real-world applications of the arts with tattoo artist Tom Rudesyle and local gallery owner and painter Christine Galagarza. Senior and The Lions Tale staff writer Jimena Santillan-Peralta recapped these experiences in a special student feature now posted to our homepage nhsd.org.
