Engaging, Enriching, and Empowering All Students through a World-Class Education

#NHSD Weekly eNews

Volume 27 | March 17, 2023

This week, our students explored cultures from across the globe and participated in presentations and activities to support their social and emotional well-being. These efforts reflect our commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment in which all students can thrive. More scenes from our classrooms and upcoming events are also below!

Exploring Cultural Heritage

Musical sounds, aromas, and bright colors from around the world filled our Middle School Cafeteria this Tuesday during our Cultural Heritage Night. We appreciate all of the students and families who hosted tables and joined us for this cultural exploration event. Visitors had the chance to learn stories and traditions and to taste samples from across the globe. Our #LittlestLions came with their passports ready! Special thanks to Ms. O'Hara, Mr. Nord, Mrs. Miller, the Student Equity Committee and the Model United Nations Club for overseeing this important cultural experience.

Each year, our third graders explore their cultural heritage and create projects to highlight the histories, cultural traditions, and their family connection to that heritage. Earlier this week, they had the chance to share their research and findings with their peers and school visitors.

Supporting Social and Emotional Wellness

All seventh graders participated in our annual Challenge Day Program, which aims to build community and help stop the teasing, violence, and alienation that are deeply part of the school experience for millions of young people every day. Students were guided through a series of interactive activities that positioned them to practice, firsthand, the tools that have proven to support individuals and school communities in creating connection, inclusivity, and breaking down barriers. Our students were guided in practicing mindfulness, active listening, taking action, the power of vulnerability, learning to responsibly manage emotions, developing self-confidence, offering compliments, and sharing gratitude.

Since 1987, Challenge Day’s award-winning programs have reached 1.5 million youth and adults in 2,500 schools and organizations. Challenge Day is one of the most successful and longest-running social and emotional learning programs in the world, and we appreciate the opportunity to offer it to our students and our staff.

High school students heard presentations from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Bucks County this week. The assembly included an informative presentation from NAMI's Youth Programs Director, Mia Scocozzo, and the personal testimony of special guest speaker, Katie Bandish, who shared her journey of recovery. The assembly offered students an opportunity to ask questions and to further their understanding of mental health challenges.

More Scenes from NHSD

Mrs. Zerby's second graders had fun this St. Patrick's Day hearing from their classmate Charlie, who constructed his own small hotel for leprechauns in anticipation. He shared that a leprechaun visited his hotel last night and left him a beautiful letter that he then read to his class. All of Charlie's classmates were very excited for him!

Mrs. Sincavage conducts a Pi Day competition each year, giving students a chance to memorize as many digits of Pi as they can. Ten students participated, and this year's winner, Brea Baranoski, bested the record from last year by memorizing 134 digits! (see her recite in the video above) The students also created Pi Day collages and researched Pi to collect clues for a Breakout Challenge.

Third graders visited with local published author, Gary Spack this week. The students enjoyed the opportunity to meet a real live author, who shared important aspects of the writing process. Mr. Spack also read one of his books and answered questions about what it means to be an author. Special thanks to librarians Mrs. Whyte and Mrs. Pedersen for arranging this special opportunity.

We are rooting for these high school students, who tested this week to compete in the American Chemical Society Chemistry Olympiad. Best wishes to Caroline Berman, Casey Dupont, Zoe Kelter, Adrian Li, Star Mertzman, Rina Notani, and Ayesha Tayal.
