Engaging, Enriching, and Empowering All Students through a World-Class Education

#NHSD Weekly eNews

Volume 13 | November 18, 2022

We have highlights from American Education Week and recent scenes from the Upper Elementary School to share this week. We also have a Q&A with Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year finalist Jacqueline Miller and great news from Lions Athletics!

American Education Week

American Education Week is a celebration of our public schools and the many professionals—from bus drivers to office staff—who play a role in educating our children. A traditional component of American Education Week is to give parents and guardians an opportunity to visit the classrooms and to see the learning process firsthand. We were delighted to welcome family members to observe and even to engage in lessons, from math exercises to building tall towers and even making homemade applesauce in our kindergarten classrooms. Mrs. Condello's students were ready with their chefs hats for the occasion!

Approaching the PA Teacher of the Year Ceremony

Jacqueline Miller Shares her Experience

We are just two weeks away from the announcement of the 2022 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. The closing ceremonies in Hershey, PA culminate a year-long process for the twelve finalists, during which they have shared their teaching practices with each other, the selection panel, and educators from across the state. We spoke with Mrs. Miller about her approach to teaching and learning and her experiences as a finalist.

Q&A with Mrs. Miller

An "Upper" Update!

Career Day

As part of our district's commitment to supporting students' career and college readiness, the UES recently hosted a Career Day. Professionals representing careers in medicine, the arts, business, and more, explained their jobs, what they enjoy and don't enjoy about them, and reflected on their career journeys. Thank you to UES school counselor Mr. Smith for arranging this opportunity and to our guest presenters who shared their insights and experiences with our students.

Student Council Food Drive

The UES Student Council conducted a food drive to assist those in need as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday. The non-perishable items they collected will benefit the patrons of Fisherman's Mark in Lambertville, an organization offering a free market and social services to the under-resourced in our local community.

UES Book Fair

The UES hosted a recent book fair bringing the bookstore experience to the UES Library! Librarian Mrs. Whyte explained, "A book fair is an excellent opportunity to build students' home libraries, further their reading and comprehension skills, and to build knowledge and vocabulary critical for understanding new subject matter... Even better, while students shopped the fair to build their own book collection, our school earned rewards which, in turn, helps us buy more books for the school!" This experience will come to the LES in early December.

Athletics Achievements

Signing Day for Lions Athletes!

Congratulations to Mia Chuma and Sophia Cozza for signing their National Letters of Intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Mia will play volleyball for Georgetown University and Sophia will play field hockey for Stevens Institute of Technology.

Suburban One Awards

We also extend our congratulations to these Lions athletes selected for the Suburban One All-League Awards.

Two Thumbs Up for the NHS Education Fund!

The New Hope-Solebury Education Fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supporting educational enrichment programs for all New Hope-Solebury students. Following grants to support an extensive mural project in our high school, to launch a broadcast studio at the UES, and to introduce a brand-new K-5 STEAM curriculum, they are continuing their fundraising efforts to provide new technology for our music program and for our state-of-the-art high school STEAM Wing opening in January 2023. Here are some of the ways you can support the Education Fund and the many extraordinary learning experiences they fund for our schools:

As you shop on Amazon, you can use Amazon Smile to select to have a portion of your purchase donated to the NHS Education Fund.
