The Ordination of Lindsay Popperson
Our Designated-Term Associate Pastor Lindsay is getting ordained at 5:30pm on October 27! The ordination service will be at the church that sponsored her through the ordination process, Hope Central Church (85 Seaverns St, Jamaica Plain MA 02130). She would love you to join her in celebrating this joyous occasion!
Steeple Damage/Aerial Photography by Drone on Friday
Last night’s high winds seriously damaged our Old North Church steeple. Two sections of 10’ high louvered sides of the lower area housing the bell were blown out, and one window in the glassed-in room on top was blown out and shattered on the ground below. There appears to be additional damage to exterior columns around that upper room. Also a cover for an attic fan on the rear peak of our roof blew off, leaving an exposed opening to the attic.

We have had our steeple and tower contractor here this afternoon after the storm. Workers removed the damaged parts of the tower to protect both people and the structure.
Don't be surprised if you see and/or hear a drone doing some low flying over our buildings on Washington St. and Stacey St on Friday, October 18. The Prudential Ministries Board has contracted with a firm to do an aerial photography survey of the condition of our roofs and appurtenances. The Board is doing this as part of a comprehensive assessment of the condition of our buildings to determine the possible need for present or near-term future capital improvements.
Financial Update - Are Your Pledge Contributions Current?
Through October 12, we have received $350,000 out of the expected amount through this date of $400,000 towards our annual budget of $500,000. We are running $50,000 behind and count on this income to come in on a regular basis to pay our bills. You can click here or go to www.onchurch.org to make your contributions by credit card or direct debit.
Sunday School News
"Why We Sing Sunday"
Karen Kilty, Director of Children's Ministries
Come and Sing! The children are invited to join the Youth Choir at 9:45am in the Music Room to rehearse. They will be singing "This Little Light of Mine" during the Introit, at the beginning of the service. We started our year together with this song. We will then head upstairs for Sunday School with Dara VanRemoortel for "Why We Sing" Sunday. Singing has such a unique way of bringing your heart, soul and mind to a happy place and when we do it together, it helps us grow together in faith, in God's love.

Welcome the Stranger
Save the Date!
Temple Emanu-el has extended an invitation to Old North and St. Andrews congregations to join them on Friday evening October 25 at 6:00 P.M. for their weekly Shabbat Service. It is an opportunity to worship together as well as to support and celebrate our collaborative effort on behalf of the Welcome the Stranger Project. A light supper will follow the service. Temple Emanu-el is located at 393 Atlantic Avenue on the right side as you head to Swampscott just before the Clifton Street traffic light.

Welcome the Stranger is a partnership of Old North Church, St. Andrews Episcopal Church and Temple Emanu-el of Marblehead. This partnership strives to provide support and community resources for those in need by partnering together with other Marblehead faith communities. Through this process we aim to develop deeper bonds and understanding of all of our neighbors. Lynda Hare and Richard Thibedeau represent ONC on the Steering Committee.

For the past three years, the partnership has supported a Haitian family who has sought political asylum in the United States. Our direct financial support is no longer needed as they are economically self sufficient. Danie is working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Lafayette Nursing Home in Marblehead, her husband Virgil is working at Crosby’s Supermarket and Annie is in pre-school on scholarship at the Tower School.

The partnership is exploring new options to assist individuals or families that may include helping newly arrived documented refugees and/or those with other types of needs. This year, the Partnership has a particular interest in involving the youth of our congregations in its work.

Adult Faith Formation:
Manna and Mercy
Starting Nov 3 at 9am, Lindsay will be leading a group studying the book Manna and Mercy, which presents the history and storyline of the Bible. Our hope is that this will give us all a chance to deepen our understanding of the Bible, and to piece together some of the stories we know (does Daniel in the lion's den happen before or after Noah and the Ark? Who are all those prophets? Why are there four gospels instead of just one?) Books will be available for purchase on the 3rd. If you're interested in the book, but 9am doesn't work for you, let Lindsay know at [email protected]

South Africa 2020!!
For those of you who are interested in participating in a life-changing experience in South Africa, we are planning an Old North trip there for two weeks in August 2020. We will spend one week with the Pholela congregation and a second week enjoying the scenic beauty of South Africa on safari, in the coastal city of Durban and on an excursion to the Kingdom of Lesotho in the Drakensburg Mountains. Our long and close friendship with the Pholela congregation of 24 villages will continue as we celebrate church gatherings, visit schools and engage in the community activities of the widespread congregation. In the past, Old North travelers and their friends from the age of 10 to late 70’s have been inspired by this unique adventure.

Please contact Ginny von Rueden at 781-631-7898 or [email protected] for questions and commitments. Airline and hotel reservations will have to be made later this fall and the group size will be limited to about 25 so we hope to hear from you soon.
