Happy New Year! Hopefully, 2024 is already off to a good start for you. With the arrival of the new year, thinking about changes and new goals comes with it. This mindset is vital for the Comprehensive Plan update happening this year. The update is expected to be completed this fall. Although a five-year update is statutorily required, it’s important that you think about how the Comprehensive Plan can help your community.
The Comprehensive Plan contains goals, objectives, and implementation strategies that enable and encourage growth for the county. We should all view the Comprehensive Plan as a tool for realizing the vision for our communities. In fact, it is a primary consideration in zone change requests and more. By giving appropriate consideration to the plan now, we as communities not only lay out our long-term objectives, but we also prevent future challenges to zone change requests our cities favor, as well as help protect against those that we may not.
I encourage you to get in touch with our Planning Department to ensure your community’s goals and projects fit in with the upcoming update to the Comprehensive Plan.

With the first round of public engagement ending, planning staff and the KCPC Implementation Committee are reviewing the results and closely analyzing the Comprehensive Plan to determine what revisions are necessary to the elements within the Plan, like the Economy, Housing, Land Use, and Community Facilities.
A second round of public engagement will occur this spring to collect additional feedback on any proposed changes. If you have not yet talked with the Planning Department to see how your community’s long-term goals and objectives can be supported by the Comprehensive Plan, now is the time to do it!
Revisions and updates will focus on recommendations and tasks to accomplish those recommendations within the Plan. When these recommendations support the changes you want to see in your community, accomplishing development can be easier and streamlined.
The Comprehensive Plan update is planned to be adopted in September of 2024. Be sure to check for updates at the Kenton County Planning Commission's website here.

Last month, the Community Development Department hosted another community development workshop at the Fort Mitchell City Building for mayors, city managers, council members, and board members.
Jeanne Schroer, President and CEO of The Catalytic Fund, returned at the request of communities who attended the first workshop to guide us through a deeper dive into identifying financing tools available for redevelopment projects.

Get to know a little more about the team behind the mission of PDS. Meet Megan Bessey, Ph.D., CCEO our Principal Planner.
What is your approach to the profession?
Megan came to be in this profession unconventionally. She started in code enforcement/zoning and then was promoted to planner. Because of this, her main objective as a planner is "assessing the needs for a safe community."
What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?
"The importance of collaboration," says Megan. She works closely with other departments, developers, jurisdictions, community members, utilities, and more. Megan continues to say, "We make great things happen for generations to enjoy."
|
|
What’s something surprising that not many people know about you?
Along with being a Planner and holding a doctorate degree, Megan is a firearms instructor, snowboarder, avid hiker, and wedding officiant/planner. Although it's not on her resume, Megan also holds the title of mom "to the coolest kid ever."
