This week, Pleasantville High School celebrated White Cane Day with a ninth-grade student named Morgan, enabling her to share her unique experience with her peers. Like many other students across the United States, Morgan is blind, so in celebration of White Cane Day, Morgan's peers had the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with many of the strategies and tools that Morgan uses to navigate school and her education.
Under the supervision of teachers of the visually impaired and orientation and mobility specialists, students navigated the patio outside of the cafeteria blindfolded, using a white cane to gently feel their way through the environment. Students worked with braille legos and braille magnets used to teach math. They even learned how to write their names in braille using a Perkins Brailler, a braille typewriter.
