Grade 7 Extra Learning Block (ELB)
|
|
The grade 7 enrichment math extra learning block has been diligently working to create board games that incorporate fraction and decimal problems. The creativity behind these games is exemplary and with the games now complete, its time to play!
|
|
In Mrs. Ouellette’s ELB, students enjoyed using close reading skills to derive the meaning of real world word problems and acting out the solutions in the form of mini “plays.” Students performed these
Word Problem Plays
for Dr. Stickney, Mr. Zywien, and Mrs. Roche just before Thanksgiving break. Students reflected that their experience will help them view word problems in more of a visual way. Student comments included “I found it creative and fun;” “I like making the props;” and “I feel like it will make it more fun to do word problems.” The students did a fabulous job working with partners and using their reading, speaking and listening, and problem solving skills for this fun activity.

DELL GUEST SPEAKERS
In honor of Computer science week, DELL sent over three guest teachers to the computer lab. They spoke with the students about their roles at DELL, and the the high school/ college classes that helped them get there. One of the Dell employees had a special connection with Northbridge MIddle School and shared how 10 years ago, he was a middle school / jigh school student at Northbridge. The guests spoke about the importance of communication, collaboration and perseverance when it comes to succeeding each day. The walked them through some coding challenges on the Code.org website.
In the middle school the students have opportunities to explore programming topics. There are: We Do and Mindstorm Robots, MIT’s Scratch Programming and a Java Scripting Unit in their computer classes.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Computing jobs are the number one source of wages in the United States and these jobs are in every industry and in every state and are projected to grow at twice the rate of other jobs. (code.org)
We were thrilled to bring DELL to the school and share this opportunity with the students.

5TH D
5th GRADE BAND'S FIRST CONCERT%
|
|
The 5
th
Grade band has been hard at work getting ready for their very first concert! These students have been playing their instruments since September, and are very eager to show what they have learned in their months of playing. For the first quarter, students had small group lessons with similar type instruments. In second quarter, the band has been playing all together as a group. The 5
th
grade band has been working on three pieces for the NMS Holiday Concert on December 15th- “Good King Wenceslas”, “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” and “Jingle Bells”. In preparation for the concert, students have been practicing together in small groups of different instruments during class time and performing in front of their classmates. Also, many students have been coming after school for additional lesson time to become even stronger musicians. Miss Oestreicher is very proud of their hard work, and we cannot wait to share our progress with the whole NMS community on December 15
