The tool allows practices to share resources with patients through printed copies, email or text messages. NowPow can provide information on local community resources, including food, shelter, transportation, affordable medications, mental health support and more. Community resources are screened and validated prior to being added to the directory and every six months thereafter. Practices will be able to search by geographic areas for specific needs and then share the information with patients.

Free health resources help patients quit tobacco, fight lung cancer
Lung cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer in both men and women in the United States and Michigan, according to the American Lung Association. More than 8,000 estimated new cases and 5,400 deaths will occur in Michigan due to lung cancer. In Michigan, Native American males have the highest rate of new cases and deaths, followed by African American males. Men of all races have a higher new case rate and mortality rate compared to women of all races.

Cigarette smoking is the cause of most lung cancer deaths in both men and women. The Michigan Cancer Consortium shares several helpful resources to help patients quit tobacco:

Michigan QuitLine : Participants can visit the website or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669) for free help. Participants work with a coach to prepare a quit plan, set a quit date, understand tobacco triggers, manage cravings and address relapses. Coaches are available 24/7.
