Maryland Legislative Session
The 2020 legislative session has begun, and while over 200 bills have already dropped between the Senate and the House of Delegates, we expect roughly another 1500 before the filing deadline has passed! The WLC is hard at work tracking those bills as they come in to ensure that Maryland continues to progress as a state that supports the physical safety, economic security and bodily autonomy for women and marginalized groups. To keep updated on the 2020 MGA and how you can make your voice heard, sign up for our Legislative E-Alerts:

WLC in the News
WLC Legal Director Laure Ruth is quoted in support of Senate Bill 230, which would repeal using marriage as a spousal defense to the prosecution of sex crimes. Currently in Maryland, an assailant may not be prosecuted for first- or second-degree rape or third- and fourth-degree sexual offenses if the victim is the legal spouse. "Laure Ruth...is optimistic the legislation will pass this year and plans to testify in support of the bill. She said the #MeToo movement has helped educate people about what is and isn't acceptable in terms of sexual interactions."
