EG Library in Our Future!

WOW! The answer to the question: "will EG ever have a library?" turns out to be YES!

The Monterey County Free Libraries staff has been working with county staff on our future library. Hillary Theyer, county Librarian, has scheduled a date for meeting about the library, at the EG Fire Station on Wednesday, February 21 from 4-7 p.m. Agenda and specifics are still being developed, but mark your calendar!

If you want to go on a field trip to libraries of a similar size to the future EG space, library staff say La Selva Beach, Carmel Valley and Gonzales are about the same size as our potential space; San Lucas Branch (south of King City) has a Sheriff's Field Office (but is a much smaller branch). All input is welcome at the meeting!

What: Library meeting, When: 2/21, 4:00 - 7:00pm, Where: fire station

Spanish language translation will be available at the meeting

CSD

The CSD meeting on Wednesday, Feb 7, is a great opportunity to learn what's happening in our community. The agenda includes an update regarding Mello-Roos taxes Annual Revenues and Expenditures as of November 30, 2023 for East Garrison Community Services District (Fund 181) and East Garrison Community Facility District (Funds 180 & 510). If you wonder where our Mello-Roos money goes, this the the place to find out.

Hope to see you there!

Parking Survey - What we learned

Thanks to everyone who answered the parking impact survey.

Sometimes when EG folks gather the talk turns to parking - the good and the bad, present and future. Our team wondered how many people really thought parking was bad (or good) in EG, and also what folks thought about the impact of future construction on parking.

The most important lesson was that we have to figure out a better way to hear from the whole community: 212 isn't very many households, most responders were single family homes, and almost no apartment-dwellers replied.

Of the 212 households who did answer the survey, we had the most responses from Phase 2 (45%) followed by Phase 1(37%) and Phase 3 (18%).

We learned that most people had enough spaces for the cars in their household, and most people didn't have trouble finding parking near their home, day or evening.

Future Parking worries?

We wondered what folks thought about future parking in EG. Here's the graph of "how worried are you?" 33% of folks are very concerned, 10% are somewhat concerned, 26% are neutral, 9% not very and 22% not at all concerned. Our team dug into the data a bit more and found Phase 3 folks are more concerned than other phases, but even there about 1/3 were neutral.

So if anyone asks whether all EG residents feel the same way, the answer is there's not a consistent, EG-wide opinion on the future impact of parking.

Lots of folks added comments. From reading them we realized that the HOA needs to review - and perhaps revise - parking regulations (Did you just say "Yeah!" to that statement? Then contact the HOA to join the Parking Committee!)

Broom Bash!

Have you ever noticed the brush piles around East Garrison? These are collections of French broom meticulously removed by dedicated volunteers, aiming to prevent the infestation of this highly invasive plant in the Fort Ord National Monument!

For over a year, Broom Bash volunteers, coordinated by Monterey County Parks and the Bureau of Land Management, have been using weed wrenches to uproot broom. To date, we have successfully organized more than 20 broom bashes, clearing out over 2.5 acres and contributing over 300 hours of service. This commendable effort has been made possible through the financial, logistical and insurance support of the Sierra Club and the Citizens for Sustainable Marina.

Our upcoming Broom Bash is scheduled for Friday, February 9, from 10am to noon. A dumpster will be conveniently placed on Lee Ave near the park for the disposal of broom piles. Whether you want to actively participate in loading broom or simply observe invasive plant removal in action, we welcome you to join us.
