AAVMC Guidelines on the Use of Animals in Veterinary Education
The AAVMC Board of Directors established the Task Force on the Use of Animals in Veterinary Education, in July 2021, with the charge of developing recommendations to the Board. The Task Force, chaired by Julie A. Hunt, DVM, MS, Associate Dean Clinical Sciences, Lincoln Memorial University recommended the development of guidelines for AAVMC member institutions. The draft was distributed to the AAVMC Assembly and AAVMC Academic Affairs Committee, in August 2022, with request to distribute to the key faculty/staff members for review and comment.
The AAVMC Guidelines for the Use of Animals in Veterinary Education were approved by the Board in October 2022. To learn more and review the guidelines, click here.

One Health: A Crucial Collaborative Tool for Early Disease Surveillance
In the past several years, the world has seen an unprecedented emergence of diseases with epidemic and pandemic potential. Epidemics of West Nile virus, Ebola, Zika, COVID-19, and mpox show how the health of people, animals, and our shared environment are closely connected. For as long as people have lived with and around animals, there has always been the potential for sharing diseases. The majority of infectious diseases that affect people are zoonotic, which means they can spread between animals and people. A One Health approach is critical to most effectively protect health for people, animals, plants, and our shared environment. One Health recognizes that the health of people, domestic and wild animals, plants, and our shared environment are closely linked and interdependent. Shared threats at the human-animal-environment interface can be addressed using a One Health approach that brings together experts from all sectors.

AAVMC Technical Standards Webinar
March 15th, 11am-12:30pm ET
Description
Technical standards for veterinary education are an increasingly important topic given the rise in the admission of students with disabilities across the health professions education. In 2022, the AAVMC convened a committee, which included a diverse group of Veterinary Medicine faculty and external disability experts, to engage in a robust conversation regarding technical standards for Veterinary Medicine. The outcome of the four-month-long interactive process was the creation of an exemplar set of technical standards.
To disseminate, provide context, and assist schools in developing technical standards that reflect the value of Veterinarians with Disabilities and advances in technology and communication access, the AAVMC is offering a free webinar for its members.
The presenters will provide an overview of their committee’s process for review, the legal and educational implications for technical standards, the importance of welcoming and inclusive language, review examples of inclusive and restrictive technical standards domains, outline reasonable clinical accommodations, and present the final set of exemplar standards for program consideration.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the intended use, legal and educational implications, and critical elements of inclusive technical standards
- Compare and contrast the difference between technical standards and learning objectives
- Apply recommendations to the review and revision of technical standards that are reflective of best practices

The AAVMC is working hard to create a culture of diversity and inclusion in every dimension of academic veterinary medicine. To foster this goal, the photographs and illustrations which are used in our communications programs are aspirational, and do not necessarily reflect the levels of diversity and inclusion that currently exist.
