Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP) issues consensus statement around Men of Color in health professions
FASHP has declared the low number of historically underrepresented men of color (HUMOC) graduating and entering the health care professions a national crisis. Representing 19 CEOs of national academic health professions associations, FASHP has released a consensus statement addressing this critical issue. FASHP is calling on local and national educational, health care, governmental and community leaders to raise awareness regarding this critical issue and to identify barriers and provide resources to dramatically increase the number of men of color graduating from the academic health professions.
FASHP comprises 19 associations representing a health professions education community that includes 7,429 programs, institutions, hospitals, and health systems, and more than 1.3 million students, faculty, clinicians, administrators, residents, and researchers.

USDA Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) Fiscal Year 2022 Annual Report is available
Food animal veterinarians are critical to maintaining a healthy, secure, and safe food supply. Today, there is a critical shortage of food animal veterinarians in both private and public practice, particularly in rural communities in the U.S. and insular areas. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) provides approximately $9 million per year in funding to help eligible veterinarians offset a significant portion of debt incurred in pursuit of their veterinary medical degrees in return for their service in certain high-priority veterinary shortage situations.
On April 25, 2023, NIFA published the VMLRP Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 annual report which provides a detailed review of the program, applicant, and awardee statistics, DVM programs with funded alumni and shortage areas awarded. How the Spectrum of Care Initiative is Connecting with the Community
A critical part of the AAVMC SOCI is to connect with the larger veterinary community to facilitate conversations around the spectrum of care and how SOCI is helping veterinary educators prepare graduates to practice across the spectrum of care options. The March 2023 Spectrum of Care Symposium, sponsored by the Stanton Foundation, was a great way to kick off several inspiring conversations. Our team has continued to build on the momentum from the Symposium by engaging with several groups across the profession through meetings, webinars, and presentations. Promoting veterinarian wellbeing by preparing students to practice across the Spectrum of Care
There are many factors that may contribute to veterinarians' wellbeing as they seek to provide the most appropriate care for their patients. Veterinarians report facing frequent ethical dilemmas, which contribute to their work-related and moral stress. Ethical challenges are often rooted in conflicts between client factors that influence care options and the type of care that students are typically taught in the veterinary school curriculum. Client factors that impact care options include the client's unique goals, values, expectations, beliefs, abilities, and resources. As students transition into general practice, they may perceive that they are failing as doctors if they cannot provide the ‘gold standard’ of care they were taught. This misperception can negatively impact new graduates' wellbeing as they navigate the realities of the general practice context. Additionally, the extent to which the professional identities and goals that students develop in training misalign with their workplace experience can also negatively impact their emotional wellbeing and career satisfaction.
Preparing graduates to practice along the spectrum of care may help improve veterinarian wellbeing in a variety of ways. By teaching students that there are multiple appropriate answers to a problem, and that the best course of action depends on the unique circumstances of each case, we can develop students’ resilience as they navigate the many contextual challenges associated with providing care in general practice. Being able to offer a range of care options can also help veterinarians treat more patients, which may affect the rate of economic euthanasia, and address issues surrounding access to care, thus improving veterinarian mental health. Finally, improved communication between veterinarians and clients about the care involved in treatment plans, costs associated with those plans, and the role of clients in helping to make care plans successful can lead to more collaborative treatment decisions and more positive interactions.

One Health AMR Core Learning Outcomes Released
Thanks to many months of work from our One Health AMR Learning Outcomes Working Group, last month we released NIAMRRE's One Health AMR Core Learning Outcomes. "This excellent group of experts in human, animal, and plant health came together to provide applicable and usable learning outcomes around antimicrobial resistance in teaching from secondary school to undergraduate degree programs to professional education. Over a year of thought, effort, and revisions created a product that can serve as a foundation in tackling this critical One Health topic." - Will Sander, Chair of AMR Learning Outcomes working group and Assistant Professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The document was formed as an update to the AMR Learning Outcomes developed by the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities and the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges AMR Core Competencies Working Group* using a One Health framework. The One Health Learning Outcomes serve as an outline for developing a curriculum to improve awareness and understanding of AMR across animals, humans, plants and the environment for youth, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professional student levels.

On Tuesday, April 11, AAVMC recognized National Pet Day by sharing a new, free resource to all of our members called the Positive Pet Care Guide. The guide was published by AVMA and generated in collaboration with Banfield Pet Hospital, Blue Pearl, MARS Veterinary Health, AAVMC, NAVTA, NOMV, Veterinary Hope Foundation, VMAE and VHMA.
