SCHEDULE CHANGES TO OUR CLINIC AND ADOPTION SERVICES
|
|
The safety and well-being of our customers, staff, volunteers and adopters are our highest priority during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
Please be advised of the following scheduling changes to our veterinary clinic and adoption services which will be in effect until 3/31:
The
ACS Community Clinic
will be making some immediate changes to the services that we offer.
At this time, we will
continue
to:
- provide cat spays and neuters as this is essential to reducing feline overpopulation and intake into our shelter.
-provide vaccine boosters to surgery patients and all patients previously scheduled for these.
- spay/neuter all dogs that have been previously scheduled.
Until further notice,
we will not schedule
any of the following:
-office visits for wellness exams, annual vaccines, and minor illnesses. If you have an upcoming appointment it will be cancelled.
- dog surgeries unless previously scheduled.
If your pet has an upcoming surgery, please use the hand sanitizer at the entrance to our clinic prior to entering our building, and enter only after someone exits to minimize crowding in our lobby. We will be emailing our surgery consent form to clients who provide us with an email address and if you are able you can print it off and fill it out ahead of time to facilitate surgery drop-offs.

FOSTER SPOTLIGHT:
Jessica Sonnema
Jessica Sonnema and her husband, Jason, started fostering for Animal Care Sanctuary back in 2018 and has been a valued foster parent ever since. Jessica saw a need for foster parents in animal rescue and after discussing it with her husband, they decided that they wanted to help in any way they could.
Jessica and Jason have fostered 5 dogs and 1 cat over the years, helping us make room in our kennel and cattery to save even more lives! Jessica jokes that their foster cat was in fact a “foster fail” because they ended up adopting her, which is a hazard of the job as a foster parent, but is not really a failure if you ask us. All five of the Sennoma’s foster dogs have found their new forever homes while in foster care because of their hard work and dedication. They have been an amazing family that has helped us in the rehabilitation of dogs in need while also finding them forever homes.
Jessica says that they continue to foster to this day because they truly enjoy being foster parents, even when it means there is a bittersweet goodbye when their foster kids find their forever homes. The Sonnema family will continue to foster and saving lives, one rescue at a time.

FROM OUR VET TEAM!
March is Poison Prevention Month!
Awareness is the key to preventing poisoning emergencies. Almost 91% of calls to Pet Poison Helpline involves dogs – a testament to dogs’ curious nature and indifference to eating just about anything.
Of these calls, nearly half were for dogs that ingested human medications. It’s clearly wise to keep medications out of their reach, but there are many other common, household substances toxic to dogs.
Pet Poison Helpline
perused their records and below are the five most common toxins that poisoned dogs: human prescription medications, human foods (such as chocolate), insecticides, r
odenticides and dietary supplements/vitamins.
If you think your pet may have ingested something harmful, take action immediately. Contact a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline at 1-800-213-6680.

CELEBRATING
WORLD SPAY DAY!
What a fabulous way to celebrate
#WorldSpayDay
! It began at 3:45 am when our staff picked up 37 cats from Delaware Valley Humane Society. The cats were all spayed and neutered at ACS and returned to their owners. What an amazing collaboration between two shelters and All Animals Matter who sponsored the surgeries.
Using our mobile transport is a great way to bring high quality, affordable spay/neuter and vaccinations to various communities. In fact this last transport had cats from Binghamton, Oxford, Norwich, Unadilla, Sydney & more. We have another transport in collaboration with All Animals Matter again in March.

SANCTUARY STORY
The Mr. Finch Cat
|
|
This feral cat was first spotted last fall in Wellsboro with soda can plastic around his neck and one leg also caught in the plastic; and so was only walking on three legs.
Mr. Joseph Finch tried to trap the feline but with no success. The cat was not seen again and feared dead.
In early February, Mr. Finch spotted the cat again. This time, he coaxed it into a trap with food and brought the feline to ACS, where our vet spayed the cat as well as removed the plastic and cleaned the wound under its leg.
Although it did not look great, this cat was really lucky that the plastic was not too deep and the wound could be cleaned and on the way to recovery.
Mr. Finch later reported that the cat is now a regular visitor for food, and we anticipate a complete recovery. We hope this serves as a reminder that if you buy soda with plastic holders or any other plastic that could cause injury or death to an animal, please cut it into many small pieces so that this type of incident is not repeated.

ASK THE BEHAVIORIST
Help! My Critter Won't Use the Litter!
Many people call to surrender their cat for not using their litter box. There are many reasons why cats exhibit inappropriate elimination.
Often while gathering details, through a myriad of questions regarding litter box cleanliness, type of litter, number of cats in the home, placement of the box, we often find out that the cat is declawed. Scratching is normal feline behavior, without their claws the cat may experience emotional distress. They’ll no longer be able to comfortably perform their natural stretching and kneading routines. This may often result in problematic behaviors including aggression resulting in biting and/or inappropriate elimination.

The first signs of spring are popping up here at ACS in Wellsboro! Nicer weather means it’s time to get outside and get some exercise with your animal friends! You can register to become a member of our Community Dog Park in our adoption office in Wellsboro or online at animalcaresanctuary.org.
Animal Care Sanctuary (“ACS”) is thrilled that Representative Clint Owlett is co-sponsoring a resolution to recognize February 25th as World Spay Day in Pennsylvania.
In addition, Animal Care Sanctuary is proud to announce that they are the recipient of a grant from Bissell to go toward the spay/neuter for feral, community free roaming cats and dogs in the borough of Wellsboro.
The ACS Community Clinic will be able to spay/neuter plus vaccinate for Rabies 10 dogs for $28 and 200 cats for $23 with Bissell covering the remaining costs. Traps are available from ACS for a deposit of $20 which is refunded upon return. ACS will offer the Wellsboro community training on trapping at their Wellsboro adoption office on Wednesday, March 25 at 6pm.
