Greetings!
The third Resource newsletter this year features stories of UN-REDD’s most recent country-driven work which has become more important than ever since healthy forests act as shields that keep humans safe from zoonotic diseases. Forest conservation and restoration are also win-wins for stimulus investments and can create millions of green jobs to boost rural economies and provide long term sustainable growth. Recovery packages therefore should be structured in ways that reduce, not increase, deforestation in order to strengthen the resilience of societies and economies.
Triggered by a changing climate forests are burning at unprecedented rates. To respond to this emergency and catalyze higher climate ambitions two articles demonstrate how it is high time to scale up efforts toward accurate, open and transparent forest data.
During the UN General Assembly UN-REDD will be present at several events at the Nature for Life Hub in the run up to the UN Biodiversity Summit.

The shamba system: an indigenous woman fights for the rights of her community
“Local communities have to be involved in decisions about forests that affect their livelihoods,” says Tecla Chumba, a Kenyan woman from the Lembus tribe and mother of four. She set up a community forest association and asked the Kenya Forest Service to give each member half an acre of land and tree seedlings that they could plant, alongside their own crops.

Community Forest Management in Colombia: lessons learned, progress and challenges
The development of a community forest economy is crucial to reduce pressure on forests, slowing the progress of the agricultural frontier and improving the quality of life of rural people that live or depend on forest ecosystems. However, it must overcome a number of technical, institutional, legal and financial barriers.

Ecological restoration as a tool for adapting and mitigating the impacts of climate change
One of the main interventions of the UN-REDD National Programme is the implementation of different forest management models that lead to solutions for deforestation and land degradation. Some of these pilot models include ecological restoration practices in native forests affected by forest fires or invasive exotic species (ISS).The first pilot model focused on the ecological restoration of territories and forests degraded by beavers in Tierra del Fuego in the Magellan region in Chile.
