Cihan Cobanoglu to serve as dean of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Cobanoglu, who has served in the interim role since August 2021, will officially take on the top job on Aug. 1.

Strategic leadership changes are coming to the Muma College of Business on the Sarasota-Manatee campus. “These changes will be of great value not only to our campus and to the college, but also to the region as a whole,” said Karen Holbrook, the regional chancellor for USF’s Sarasota-Manatee campus. Read more.

Student Spotlight: Jacob O'Neil


Jacob O’Neil is the first to admit he was a bit lost during his first two years at USF.

The USF Muma College of Business junior and finance major was unmotivated and unsure of his career path. But O’Neil found his academic and pre-professional footing thanks to the new career development programs and services at the Bellini Center for Talent Development. Read more.

College bids farewell to dean at send-off event


The USF Muma College of Business held a farewell reception for departing Dean Moez Limayem. Officials announced two scholarships established in his name. The fund for first generation students raised $383,725. A second fund for emergency student relief raised $9,429. Watch more.

Faculty Spotlights

Marvin Karlins, a professor in the School of Information Systems and Management, had his 2021 co-authored article, “Hacked by Bits and Pieces: What Can We Learn from an Example of Corporate Espionage?” included in Cybersecurity Trends, which is published in four different languages.


Lei Wedge, an associate professor in the Kate Tiedemann School of Business and Finance, was quoted in a Tampa Bay Times story about mortgage rates going up and their impact on homebuyers. Wedge was also quoted in a story on the median price for single-family homes. 


Jong Chool Park, an assistant professor in the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy, had a paper titled “Market for Corporate Control and Demand for Auditing: Evidence from International M&A Laws” accepted for publication in FT50 Journal Review of Accounting Studies


James Whitworth, an assistant professor in the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy, was featured in a “Ask the Experts” column on wallethub.com about debt consolidation loans. 

 

Russell Clayton, an assistant professor of instruction in the School of Marketing and Innovation, was quoted in a Fox-13 news story about companies expanding remote work to slow pay raise pressures.

Alumni Updates

Cherita Thomas (‘96, BS, Finance) recently started as senior director, securities counsel, and assistant corporate secretary at Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc., a holding company headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois that owns retail pharmacy chains.


Roby Sawyers (‘86, MACC, Accounting) was named the head of the department of accounting at North Carolina State University’s Poole College of Management. He has been with the college since 1989 as a professor and director of the undergraduate accounting program.


Nicole Justice (‘06, BS, Management) was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to the state’s Board of Medicine. Justice is the senior director of patient safety at Tampa General Hospital.


Nate Kilton (‘01, BS, Finance) was officially sworn in as Plant City’s new mayor.


Tanecia Scott (’16, BS, Information Management Systems, ’11, BS, Marketing) is going back to her marketing roots and took a new job as a lead marketing analyst at telecommunications company Lumen Technologies.


Frank Harris IV (‘19, BS, Finance) started a new position as an investment banking associate at Crosstree. He is a former USF Muma College of Business 25 Under 25 honoree.

James Wallace, ('21, DBA) president of AmeriPlus Select Services in Clearwater, turned his Doctor of Business Administration dissertation into a published article in the European Journal of Information Systems, a top scientific journal. His paper "Patient health locus of control: the design of information systems for patient-provider interactions," was published online on June 16. The article's co-authors include USF faculty members Matthew Mullarkey and Alan Hevner.

Michael Boorom, a four-time USF alum, gave more than $100,000 to the School of Marketing and Innovation at the USF Muma College of Business to benefit undergraduate and graduate sales students. Boorom has been recognized multiple times on USF Alumni Association's Life Member Honor Roll for his contributions.
