Sunmarke Students’ Racing Glory


Sunmarke’s ‘recent F1 in Schools Race Day’ saw an interesting showcase of innovation, teamwork and forward-thinking in action. As part of the dynamic ECA and Elective programme, students didn’t just build and race miniature F1 cars, they also engineered solutions, presented business plans and planned marketing strategies. The entire exercise was a great experience in gaining real-world skills that fuel success far beyond the track.

The impact of the January windstorm named “Santa Ana” during which winds reaching up to 100mph (160 km/h) swept over Southern California, is still being felt. Described by the National Weather Service (NWS) as “life threatening”, the storm fanned flames that were spotted on the mountain sides to the west of Los Angeles turning into a fast-moving force that caused massive destruction and forced roughly 30,000 residents to evacuate. We have seen such episodes in the past even in very cool areas such as Antarctica in 2018. Named the “Föhn effect”, the winds back then were massively blamed for the forcing of a large volume of ice away from the coast of Greenland. Want to know more about it, click here

Canada has had a few interesting months. Justin Trudeau was forced to step down and his Liberal party’s shine was waning. But then came the big surprise! Donald Trump’s tariffs and threat to annex Canada threw up a new hero - Mark Carney, former Central Bank head, who took over as interim PM. He vowed to fight the US, united Canada and carried out a successful election campaign on the back of anti-Trump statements. Carney is officially now the PM with his Liberal Party, beating the conservatives. Perhaps he should send the US President a ‘Thank you’ note!
