THERAPEUTIC RECREATION NEWSLETTER
JUNE 2021
Our goal with this newsletter is to bring a creative spin to the way that we stay in touch while showcasing all what the St. Petersburg Parks & Recreation Department’s Therapeutic Recreation Division has to offer.
MAY HIGHLIGHTS
May was a big month for both the participants and their families here in the Therapeutic Recreation Division! From cooking some delicious foods to staying up all night at the annual overnight, this month kept us on our toes! 
F.I.T. 5K
 
We also unleashed our inner athlete this month with our Fitness In Therapeutics program participants completing a 5K! We had custom shirts made as we came together to show our abilities and prove that our preparation paid off and led us to the finish line. Thank you to Healthy St. Pete for making this event a memorable one. 
FAMILY SELF-CARE NIGHT
 
Family was the common theme in May with a few of the programs inviting loved ones to participate in recreation and leisure together. The family self-care night set us off on a great note as we began the month with clear minds, bodies and souls. Participants enjoyed therapeutic massage, a healthy cooking demo and ended the evening with some floor and chair yoga to relax. 
FAMILY FISHING TRIP
 
We explored our ability to use a rod and reel on a family fishing adventure at Fort DeSoto that proved a smash hit as we had an awesome amount of people participate in the event! Thank you to TASCO for all the support and equipment that helped make this event happen. 
COOKING CLASS
 
A full four course meal was prepared by our master chefs in TR cooking this month. The meal featured soup, salad, appetizers, a main course and even dessert. Cooking class will begin again in September 2021 so stay tuned for more information on upcoming classes.
LIFE 2.0
 
Learning Independence For Everyone (L.I.F.E.) 2.0 is the next step in the L.I.F.E. program. This mini class is specifically designed for graduates for the L.I.F.E. program to dive deeper into the topics of community involvement, mental health and healthy living. L.I.F.E. and L.I.F.E. 2.0 are leisure education programs for emerging adults (ages 16-25) and will be offered again. 
PICKLEBALL
 
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong and is also fun, social and friendly. This program brought out many participants both new and veteran to our TR program. We will be offering this fan favorite program again so stay tuned for more details.
OVERNIGHT AT THE CENTER
 
Finally, to cap of the month we hosted an Azalea Lock-in Overnight event. Participants came for a sleepover at the center where we hosted games, watched movies and enjoyed dinner and a nice breakfast the next day.
PROGRAM REMINDERS & UPDATES
Summer camp is fast approaching! We are excited to see everyone this summer and reconnect with our Camp Redbird family while also bringing in some new faces. Currently, Camp Redbird is full for the summer of 2021, but we are accepting participants who want to be added to the waitlist. Camp will be starting Monday, June 14, and will go through Friday, July 30.  

  • Remember to make sure your paperwork and camp payment is submitted by Monday, June 14.
  • Early registration for next year's summer camp will begin sometime in July so stay tuned for more information in the next newsletter.
  • Keep a lookout for the new TR brochures/calendars that will be distributed via email in August detailing our scheduled programs for September through December 2021.

Year-round Therapeutic Recreation programming will resume September 2021.
