You may recognize this image if you have visited the library recently. Acquired in 2018, this painting by John Huszer currently hangs behind the Reference Desk in the library’s lower level. Huszer (b.1912-d.1983) is recognized as the founder of the Wickford Art Festival and Wickford Art Association, and he was one of Wickford’s most eccentric and recognizable figures, operating his studio/gallery space in the Gregory Building on Main Street for over 20 years. Around the time he made this painting in 1962, Huszer was honing his skill as an artist, living a life of solitude on Cornelius Island in Wickford Harbor.  The painting shows a winter view looking across Wickford Cove at the back side of the Lewis Brothers’ twin homes on Bay Street. The Lewis Brothers were successful trap fishermen in the earlier 1900s. With Huszer’s evocative use of color and light you can almost feel the winter chill coming off the painting. Learn more about Huszer’s life here.
