SUMMER 2025

NEW RIVER VALLEY PROJECT CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Construction at Cambria and Radford is underway!

Thank you for your interest in VPRA’s New River Valley project! This project will enhance freight and extend passenger rail service along the corridor between Roanoke and the New River Valley (NRV). In 2024, VPRA and Norfolk Southern came to an agreement for purchase of the Manassas Line and operating rights on Norfolk Southern’s main line (N-Line) that will allow for expanded service, a passenger station at Cambria Rail Yard in Christiansburg, and a layover facility in Radford.

You may have noticed the station site already looks quite different than it did at our groundbreaking ceremony a few months ago. Construction has begun on the future New River Valley passenger rail station and is progressing smoothly.

Future Passenger Station at Cambria

The removal of trees has been completed along the entirety of the site at Cambria, including along the embankment by the old depot building and along the access road. You may still see tree stumps across the site; those are still being cleared. The removal of trees along the north side of the tracks is underway to make room for the jack and bore machines. Jack and bore machines are used for installing pipes and other underground structures by digging a borehole beneath the surface, minimizing above-ground impact. Precast drainage structures and steel casing pipes have been delivered, these will be used for the jack and bore operations, which are scheduled to begin the week of June 16th.

Construction crews have begun to remove the existing tracks east of the new Norfolk Southern Maintenance of Way building, all the way down to the far eastern end of the project at the access road connection to Depot Street.

The proposed access road has been roughly graded. Rough grading is one of the ways construction crews prepare the subgrade, or the ground, for roadbed materials and the eventual finish grading. You will continue to see large construction vehicles grading, filling, and excavating at different areas around the site as construction progresses.

Radford Layover Facility

In Radford, crews are using a crane and vibratory hammer to install a sheet pile retaining wall south of future Layover Track 1. A sheet pile is a type of pile that is basically a flat piece of steel that has been shaped into an interlocking z-shape. The contractor is expected to finish driving all of the sheet pile retaining wall at the Radford site in the next few weeks.

The site’s stormwater diversion ditch has been lined with erosion and sediment stone to slow the speed of storm runoff to prevent soil erosion. Crews have placed a different, smaller stone along the access road east of the overpass.

We are looking forward to watching construction progress at both Cambria and Radford. Please reach out to VPRA with any questions about construction or the New River Valley Project at contactus@vpra.virginia.gov, or at 804-303-8700.
