February 2025

ANAC stands firmly committed to Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI) across all aspects of our society. We champion DEI initiatives across the country in various organizations and industries, academic and research efforts and in communities and professions.

ANAC proudly salutes & honors the work of the ANAC DEI committee and the leadership and vision of current and past members and co-chairs. Recognized as a formal standing ANAC committee in 2004, the ANAC DEI Committee addresses cultural and ethnic diversity in HIV/AIDS disease, treatment and care; assists the organization to effectively address the needs of its racial/ethnic minority membership; and implement ANAC's core values.

Supporting diversity is a core value of ANAC: We promote the inclusion of members with diverse backgrounds and perspectives in the leadership and work of all association activities and initiatives. Diversity of members includes all personal aspects such as, but not limited to: race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and political affiliation. It also includes an individual’s professional discipline, educational preparation, populations served, and geographical practice/employment location.

Award Feature

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Student Fellowship

JJ Jackson, MA, NCC, LCPC, LPC, was awarded the 2024-20205 ANAC Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Student Fellowship. JJ is a 2nd-year doctoral student at the University of Rochester’s School of Nursing, focusing on promoting psychiatric and sexual health outcomes among Black sexual and gender-diverse communities domestically and abroad. Clinically, JJ is a licensed psychotherapist supporting clients along the East Coast. Previously, JJ served as a federal Project Officer overseeing the dissemination of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program before entering the PhD program at the University of Rochester.

The ANAC DEI fellowship recognizes a member of a historically underrepresented racial or ethnic minority group in nursing or another health-related discipline who has a genuine interest in HIV/AIDS care. The recipients establish a one-year mentor/mentee relationship with an ANAC member and presents their work & experience at the following ANAC Annual Conference.

  • There are two co-chairs of the Nominating Committee, one elected by membership and one appointed by the ANAC Board

Policy

ANAC signs-on

ANAC is a member of several national and global coalitions, dedicated to either HIV or nursing policy issues. Working in coalition is a strategy to share resources and information and to amplify a single voice. There is power & support in working in coalitions. This is needed now more than ever. Each month we participate in coalition letters to legislators and other key decision makers. This is a busy time, with new issues such as opposition to DOGE, support for USAID and Medicaid and on-going issues, such as full practice authority still critical. An ever-evolving list of sign-on letters we participate in is available on our website.

#HandsoffMedicaid

While the House of Representatives just passed a House 2025 budget bill with massive cuts to Medicaid, the previously passed Senate 2025 budget bill had general health & welfare spending cuts, but did not specifically call out Medicaid. The next step in the legislative process is for the House & Senate to get together and draft a single compromise (reconciliation) bill from their respective bills, to be voted on by both houses and sent to the White House for final signature approval. All within the next two weeks. We know that cuts to Medicaid are dangerous and could result in hospitals and clinics limiting services, millions of patients will lose coverage and we will never End the HIV Epidemic without Medicaid. FamiliesUSA has more information and an advocacy toolkit.

Education

UNCENSORED: Resistance Through Education

We have started a new initiative focused on providing a platform for health professionals to share censored, canceled or modified talks on DEI, HIV, PrEP, gender and sexuality. If your presentation was canceled, censored modified or otherwise restricted, we want to help amplify your voice and ensure evidence-based education continues through a series of ANAC webinars. Our first sessions are being scheduled for mid-March and invitations will be sent to all ANAC members and allies. If you are interested in presenting an uncensored version of your talk, please reach out to Mwikali Kamami or submit your information.

Overcoming Barriers to PrEP Uptake: Nursing Perspectives

Through ANAC’s partnership with Clinical Care Options (CCO), Carole Treston joined with ANAC expert faculty Nina Sublette (Memphis, TN), Joe DeSantis (Miami, FL), and Sheryl Malone-Thomas (Houston, TX) to raise awareness about HIV and PrEP inequities in these specific jurisdictions. These hybrid meetings were held at Schools of Nursing and available virtually to ANAC members across the respective state, and are part of ANAC’s larger effort to address inequities in PrEP awareness and uptake in southern states. Global

PEPFAR statement

In February, the Global Committee and Board of Directors issued a statement calling for Immediate Full Reinstatement of PEPFAR to Save Lives and Uphold U.S. Leadership in Ending the Global HIV Epidemic.

CUGH Conference

Mwikali Kamami, global coordinator, represented ANAC at the annual Consortium of Universities in Global Health (CUGH) Conference in Atlanta, where the role and participation of nurses in global health was evident.

The need for the global health community to collectively navigate today’s complex political landscape was a major theme. The increasing presence of nurses in these discussions and actions is a big step forward and ANAC is committed to moving this forward.
