CEO Insights

Happy July. As the summer season flies by, I hope you are staying safe and enjoying time with your loved ones.

This month I want to touch on something that is on the forefront of our minds as we develop workforce solutions at Employ Milwaukee: job quality. An essential piece of workforce development is the understanding that people don’t just need jobs; they need good jobs. Employees deserve to be respected, heard, safe, and engaged. That means ensuring the job seekers who walk through our doors are connected to opportunities and employers who embody the eight Good Jobs Principles developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and Department of Labor.  In fact, EMI was recently awarded $3 million for the Milwaukee Equitable Nursing Expansion (MEND) program that was designed around the Good Jobs Principles to increase job quality and retention for Milwaukee area nurses.

Good jobs are fruitful for employers as well: a workplace that is known for valuing the needs of their employees makes them an employer of choice – leading to better recruitment and retention. Employ Milwaukee’s Business Solutions Team works closely with businesses of all sizes to understand their unique needs and provide tailored talent solutions to help them thrive. If you may benefit from their services, please don't hesitate to reach out to our Manager of Business Solutions Jeffrey McAllister via email or phone.

Enjoy the rest of these summer months!

Sincerely,

Chytania Brown

SUCCESS STORY

Following Her Passion

Kailey Legrand is a Milwaukee native who moved back to Wisconsin from Massachusetts in 2019. Kailey has a family history of nurses and other healthcare professionals. She had already begun employment in healthcare, but was looking to take the next step in her career journey. While scrolling through social media, Kailey saw an ad for Employ Milwaukee’s YouthBuild program. YouthBuild provides opportunities for youth and young adults ages 16-24 to successfully transition into postsecondary education or a job on a career pathway.  Some of the program’s elements include education attainment, career exploration, paid work experience, and occupational skill training.

After finishing her time in the program earlier this year, Kailey is now pursuing promising leads on a CNA position. Kailey continues to share her experience with others who are interested in pursuing a sustainable career field.

SECTOR SPOTLIGHT

Clean Energy Infrastructure

New, federal investments in Clean Energy Infrastructure will require a ready and trained workforce for Green Jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines Green Jobs as jobs that produce goods or provides services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources. Training diverse job seekers to fill these Green Jobs is essential to addressing the ongoing climate crisis and mitigating racial and economic inequality. The occupations below are a snapshot of the vast field of Green Jobs. The City of Milwaukee Environmental Collaboration Office’s Milwaukee Climate and Equity Plan includes the Green Jobs Accelerator in partnership with Employ Milwaukee, that is designed to train and employ more people of color in family-sustaining green jobs.
