Food pioneer Gemma Moran leaves a legacy of caring
Gemma began working at United Way of Southeastern Connecticut in 1973 and served as a vital link between the United Way programs and services and working men and women. Through her work as a labor liaison and referral agent, Gemma saw the needs in the community firsthand.

In 1988 the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center became a reality in partnership with the AFL-CIO local unions and with the help of numerous volunteers. The Food Center began with just a few member pantries and has grown to 68 member agencies that are part of the local emergency food system to feed those in need.

Gemma was an activist, pioneer, founder, United Way AFL-CIO Labor Liaison, and fridge-filler.

Donations to The Gemma Legacy Fund will be invested to collectively create sustainable support for the ongoing operation of the Food Center program. Our vision is to best position the Food Center to eliminate food insecurity in New London County.
Your Voice Counts Celebration
Pictured above are students who successfully completed Your Voice Counts along with New London Youth Affairs staff. (Please note the link below will bring you to our YouTube channel.)
The inaugural Your Voice Counts program recently concluded with a celebration event.

Students were challenged to create a project that showcases their learning and intentions for putting skills into practice beyond the classroom. The final event honored the time and effort students put into their personal development and projects.

Your Voice Counts promotes trust and civility, aiming to improve communication, critical thinking, and understanding among high school students.

Youth gain skills needed to navigate conversations that often result in divisiveness to help make the world a kinder place, one which will contribute to a more positive community.

Volunteer of the Month

Paul Cummings has been a faithful, "regular" volunteer every Tuesday for the last two years at the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center.

He is independent and a leader. He's helped show the ropes to new volunteers. He's reliable and very easy to get along with.

Thank you Paul!
