Hardy witch hazel

is ideal for a variety of landscapes

Spring or vernal witch hazel (Hamamelis vernalis) is a deciduous shrub native to the central United States. In contrast to American or Ozark witch hazel (H. virginiana), the H. vernalis is recognized for its early spring blooms from late winter to early spring.

The vibrant spring color of witch hazel’s bloom is a welcome sight when most plants are still dormant. The yellow to reddish-orange flowers have a subtle fragrance that attracts pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, when pollinator food is scarce.

In addition to its beauty, spring witch hazel offers ecological benefits. It provides shelter and food for birds and small mammals, and its seeds are a food source in the fall. Thanks to its deep roots, the shrub also contributes to soil health and prevents erosion.

Low-maintenance and resilient, spring witch hazel thrives in various soil conditions and is drought-tolerant, making it perfect for novice and experienced gardeners. Its hardiness makes it perfect for naturalizing areas, enhancing shaded garden spaces, or developing a living fence that supports birds and pollinators.

Forrest Keeling offers RPM-produced spring and American witch hazel specimens in #3 and #5 sizes.
