Working Backwards Opens Sat 7/18

We are pleased to present Working Backwards, a group exhibition of 15 outstanding local printmakers, celebrating the breadth of techniques and creativity expressed in contemporary printmaking. It is a remarkably versatile medium, capable of a range of visual expression from fine line work to painterly ink application, and it demands a technical prowess that sets it apart among artistic modes.

While mediums like painting allow for revision throughout the process, for printmakers there is no returning to a previous step in the print once the ink has been laid. Despite, or perhaps because of, these restrictions, artists have been using printmaking processes for centuries to produce beautiful, provocative, informative and humorous work that is a marvel of technical skill. We hope you'll join us for the opening reception for Working Backwards on Saturday, July 18 from 4-6 pm.

Final Resting Place

Artist Mike Ryczek recently delivered the final two paintings of his latest series, the majority of which was featured in Resting Place, a two-person show with Nicole Duennebier last fall. For this series, Ryczek based his paintings on painstakingly constructed models that he was inspired to create after visiting St. Louis Cemetery in New Orleans. These models proved especially generative, as Ryczek completed four additional paintings in the series (including the two featured below) after the show opened. Ryczek was recently profiled by Michael Rose for New England Art News, which you can read here, and three of his paintings were chosen as finalists for the Prisma Art Prize in Rome.

Introducing Melissa Krok-Horton

We're often asked how we meet the artists we work with; in the case of Melissa Krok-Horton, we met her last fall while jurying the Red Dot Show for the Cambridge Art Association. Krok-Horton made a piece for our still life self-portrait show Material Self earlier this year, and has recently delivered four new works to the gallery - stop by to see them in person!
