Meet the owners of Gideon Welles
By Patrick Butler

Like everything else in the Lincoln Square/Ravenswood area, the bar and restaurant at 4500 N. Lincoln Ave. has seen its share of changes.

Over the years, that corner watering hole just across the street from Welles Park has been the Parkside, then Latitudes, and finally the Gideon Welles.

But the one thing Eghan Murphy and his partners, Don Lucey and Joel Messner don't ever want to see change is the tavern's reputation as "the kind of place where everyone knows your name."

Get back on the (No. 11) bus!
By Patrick Butler

Use it or lose the No. 11 Lincoln Avenue route, CTA officials warned at their June board meeting as they granted yet another reprieve at least until Sept. 1 at the transit agency's latest board meeting.

After that, "we expect to make a determination on whether to extend, modify or conclude the pilot sometime this summer and run the service until the fall schedule goes into effect no matter what decision is ultimately made," CTA spokeswoman Irene Ferradaz said.

Planning the Perfect Summer Potluck

With the official arrival of summer, it's time for potluck parties on the patio! The potluck is the most stress-free way to entertain, however even the guest-driven event needs to be managed correctly.

Here's advice from The Chopping Block's chefs for pulling off the best potluck your neighborhood has ever seen.

"And they're off...." to Arlington Park!

It's off to the races for the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce which will be holding its 9th annual Arlington Park outing July 27th. The bus leaves O'Donovan's Bar, 2100 W. Irving Park at noon and returns around 6 p.m. Space is limited to 40, so early reservations are recommended. Tickets are $40 for members, $55 f or non-members.

"With the completion of the first of four phases, we are making excellent progress towards our goal of being better positioned to meet the needs of our patients, our Emergency Department physicians and clinical staff," said Anthony Guaccio, president and CEO of Swedish Covenant Hospital.

Summer Jam at Concordia Place

This summer, Concordia Place is offering a series of music and entertainment events at each location for families and the community.  On June 17, our Whipple location held the first event of the series with 70 families and community members in attendance.  Jennifer Viets, our resident teaching artist from Arts Connect Chicago, was on hand to lead a creative movement and music class along with the Irish Music School who performed Irish dancing.  The games for children and food were also a bit hit and fun was had by all.

A Lifetime of Learning - The Importance of Dog Training Longevity and Maintenance
By: Brittney Frazier, Found Chicago Boarding and Training Center

Have you ever heard of a person refer to their dog as "trained" or that their dog needs to  be "trained?" The notion that dog training is an event which happens only once du ring the course of a dog's life leads people to believe that dogs are such simple creatures; only needing a few commands performed mediocrely in order to turn into the exemplary citizens we desire them to be. Or maybe we believe our  dogs to be so intelligent that we expect them to learn each life lesson only once and our expectations of them should stay at the same high standard.
